On an cloudy June evening, Merritt NatureKids and their families explored their artistic skills with the Nicola Valley Art Council, a non-profit organization powered by creative energy and respect for all people. The Explorer Day took place at Marquart Lake, a spot that is popular for fishing, camping, canoeing and hiking.
The Merritt NatureKids had a blast creating paw print necklaces and making new friends.

They also spotted many different wild creatures including a western toad! The bumps on a western toad are not warts, instead they are used to defend against attacks from predators. If a western toad feels threatened, they can release a sticky fluid from these bumps that tastes bad and can cause an animal’s mouth to feel tingly and numb. Did you know that female western toads can produce up to 16,500 eggs in one clutch?

Even dragons could be found at the lake, but not the kind that you find in fantasy books! Did you know that British Columbia is home to 87 species of dragonflies? They can fly up to 56 km/hour and are flying experts.

A big thank you to our Merritt club leaders for organizing such a fantastic Explorer Day for our members.
