VANCOUVER – A Bat-tastic Morning at Copley Community Orchard!
- 9:50 am - 12:00 pm
Hello Vancouver Families: On Saturday July 13, we’ll visit the Copley Community Orchard in east Vancouver. Our nature mentor, Tanya, will start the morning with a tour of the property, including many garden beds, fruit-bearing bushes, and fruit trees. Following the tour, local bat expert Danielle Dagenais from Bats BC will tell us all about these little nocturnal creatures who play an important role in maintaining healthy ecosystems. For example, did you know that bats can eat about 6,000 to 8,000 insects every night? Some local BC bat species are considered at risk, and we’ll learn what we can do to help them. Danielle will bring some taxidermy bats in a glass case so we can see what they look like up close. After the bat workshop, we’ll visit with a few live animals: a mini chicken, a regular-size chicken, and a rabbit. Lastly, we’ll have the opportunity to join other volunteers in watering and weeding the garden beds – a favourite NatureKidsks activity during past visits to the orchard.
Feel free to bring food if you’d like to stay for a picnic in the orchard. Often, a local music group starts performing at about 11:30.
