Meet Anshdeep, one of our amazing NatureKids BC volunteers that helps provide meaningful moments in nature for families in the Nanaimo area!
A bit about Anshdeep!
I’m Anshdeep Gill! I moved to beautiful British Columbia six years ago and have been living on the island ever since. I’m passionate about adventure and believe that playing and learning in nature is one of the best ways for kids to grow and thrive. By day, I work full-time in an office, but my true joy comes from spending time outdoors, exploring, and creating and admiring art. I’m excited to help kids connect with nature and discover the wonders of our local plants, animals, wild places and natural beauty through fun and engaging activities. Let’s explore together and inspire a love for nature.
Can you tell us a bit about yourself and how you experience nature around you?
I come from Rajasthan, India, which has a completely different climate and landscape compared to Canada. It’s a hot, arid region, whereas here, I’ve been amazed by the lush forests, diverse wildlife, and cooler weather. Experiencing nature in Canada has been incredible—it’s like discovering a whole new world!
What do you like about volunteering and what inspired you to join NatureKids BC?
What I love about volunteering with NatureKids BC is the freedom to be creative in organizing activities while always having support when needed. I was inspired to join because I wanted to give back to the community that welcomed me wholeheartedly. Canada is my home now, and this opportunity allows me to build connections while helping kids develop an appreciation for nature.
Do you have a favourite NatureKids moment that you can share with us?
One of my favorite NatureKids moments was leading an event about pollination. We taught kids about the different parts of a flower and how pollination works through interactive activities. They had so much fun creating mini wildflower bouquets and using a chart to identify local flowers found on Vancouver Island. Seeing their excitement and curiosity made it a truly special experience!
