Meet Carmen, one of our amazing NatureKids BC volunteers that helps provide meaningful moments in nature for families in the Vancouver area!
A bit about Carmen!
Carmen moved to Vancouver from Mexico back in 2008. Having fallen in love with Canada’s mesmerizing nature, she became a regular Rockies and Coastal Mountains hiker. Her passion for the outdoors grew, forging her to not only care more about the environment and strive to live a healthier lifestyle but also to develop her backcountry and camping skills.
Can you tell us a bit about yourself and how you experience nature around you?
I have always enjoyed being outside in nature, and when I moved to Canada, I fell in love with its vast natural beauty. Now that I have a child and want to share nature with her, we are regularly outdoors all year round, going for hikes, overnight backpacking trips, playing in the ocean, in the snow, you name it! If it’s outdoors, we are in, not only for the adventure but also for the calmness of being surrounded by nature.
What do you like about volunteering and what inspired you to join NatureKids BC?
I joined NatureKids because I believe in the positive role that nature plays in kids’ development, and also in inspiring younger generations to care for the environment. David Attenborough once said: “No one will protect what they don’t care about, and no one will care about what they have never experienced.”
Kids need nature and nature needs kids.
Do you have a favourite NatureKids moment that you can share with us?
My favourite NatureKids moments are seeing the kids enjoying nature at their own pace, stopping to touch and smell a flower, finding sticks to play with, looking at a bird mesmerized, asking questions, always curious, always joyful. It is quite beautiful.
