We will be joining the Arrow Lakes Caribou Society for a community lichen pick. ALCS is a non-profit in Nakusp which is working to recover the Central Selkirk herd of southern mountain woodland caribou (the southernmost herd left in BC – just 26 animals remaining). The maternity pen project in Nakusp houses pregnant cows from March – July annually to keep them and their calves safe from predators. During penning, caribou are fed tree lichen that they normally eat in the wild. We will be learning more about caribou and the maternity pen project, and then heading out on a short hike to collect lichen for the caribou.
