Come out on Jan. 4 th , to celebrate the third annual CBC4Kids, an exciting afternoon of
counting birds and being a real Citizen Scientist.
Through the forest, down to the bay and up into the meadows of Xwaaqw’um (Burgoyne
Bay) will be our route, walking through these different habitats we’ll scout out the birds.
Down by the bay we are sure to see several species of ducks, grebes, kingfishers and
possibly loons. It’s a known hangout for seals, even the odd sea lion! Hiking up into the
open meadows we’ll encounter songbirds like chickadees, nuthatches, Golden-crowned
Sparrows and Kinglets, Stellar’s Jays, Red-breasted Sapsuckers, flickers and you name
it. Raptors too! A Red-tailed Hawk is often seen there in a lone, fir tree.
We’ll share tips on using your binoculars effectively. Perhaps you might like to learn to
use the Merlin app! An Ebird checklist for this count is a must and we will submit it to
Birds Canada where they can use our numbers in scientific research. So, not only will
you be learning your local birds and having fun, you’ll also be supporting bird
conservation!
The Christmas Bird Count is an annual worldwide census of bird species, which has
been going on for 126 years, in Canada. The data pool we will contribute to is critical
with understanding the changes that climate change is bringing to avian species.
