On Sunday June 4, we will be heading out to the beach close to Lumberman’s Arch in Stanley Park to explore the intertidal zone. The tide will be at its lowest point (.8 ft) around 12:30 p.m., so we will follow the tide out starting at 11:45.
Low tides give us the opportunity to see plants and animals that are usually covered by water. Animals have to be incredibly adaptive to survive during these hours. Can you think of some of the dangers they face when they are exposed like this? How might they protect themselves from these dangers? Our Nature Mentor, Sharon Adelman, a long-time volunteer with the Vancouver Aquarium, will help us solve these mysteries of the intertidal zone. We’ll start off by learning about beach “etiquette” i.e., how we can explore the beach without harming any of the creatures who are struggling to survive in this fragile environment.
Extra!! For families who are interested—and depending on the weather—we’ll meet at 11:15 for a ’bring your own lunch’ picnic at the meeting location. Food can also be purchased at the concession. This is a great way to meet other families in the Vancouver Club of NatureKids BC.
This event is for NatureKids BC members. Become a member today!
