DESCRIPTION:Salmon Run \nWe will meet at Creekside Park (at the parking lot) to observe the Kokanee Salmon run\, learn about their life cycle and play socially distanced games. I will send out an email with our new safety guidelines and informed consent agreement. With hand sanitizer\, our new forms and positive language to encourage children to remain socially distanced\, we are ready for more outdoor learning 🙂 Masks are invited/optional but not required. We are asking for a minimum of 4 children to run this event (I doubt we will need a maximum based on the size of our club). \nI believe now\, more than ever\, outdoor learning is key. NatureKids is a great way to meet with other families in our community in a safe way to connect with one another\, other families and the outdoors.

DESCRIPTION:We’re excited to announce our collaboration with Alouette River Management Society’s (A.R.M.S.) September 27th Rivers Day in Maple Ridge! \nWe plan to choose an area along the Alouette River to clean up trash with tongs and bags and learn about how littering negatively effects the habitats of so many different creatures. We have not yet determined the location but it will likely be at or near Maple Ridge Park. \nIn light of the ongoing COVID-19 crises\, this event must\, unfortunately\, be limited to only 4 families. DESCRIPTION:20th Anniversary Celebration: Tree Planting at Jericho Beach Park \nJoin us to celebrate 20 years at our next Explorer Day: Tree Planting at Jericho Beach Park. The Jericho Stewardship Group (JSG) will be our Nature Mentors and we’ll learn all about the native species of the park and what JSG is doing to protect it. Our NatureKids Vancouver Club will be contributing to the enhancement of the park by planting a wide variety of trees and shrubs including Vine Maple\, Big Leaf Maple\, Bitter Cherry\, Saskatoon\, Grand Fir\, Indian Plum and Elder. This Explorer Day will be part of the 20th Anniversary of NatureKids BC and we hope you will be able to stay for the celebration\, which is from 11:00 to 11:30. \nThe Jericho Stewardship Group is a volunteer organization whose mission is to enhance the natural habitat of Jericho Beach Park in collaboration with the Vancouver Park Board. For more information on JSG see http://jerichostewardship.ca \nMeeting Location: We will be meeting on the West side of the park at the entry point where NW Marine Dr. and Discovery St. intersect (See map below). \nCOVID-19: The Jericho Stewardship Group has been following the Parks Board protocol to ensure they are doing everything in their power to stop the spread of COVID-19. DESCRIPTION:Releaf Tree Planting with the City of Surrey  \n\nTo celebrate 20 years of NatureKids BC in 2020 we are organizing province/club-wide Tree Planting Explorer Days with a goal to plant 200 trees in our 20th year. Just as our kids themselves grow from care and attention and access to nature\, trees are beautiful symbols of investing in our future. Trees are also one of the best ways to fight climate change and tree planting continues to be a deeply impactful way for our members to “take action”. We hope this will be a unifying activity for the whole organization across the province\, setting the  foundation for the exciting next 20 years!\n\n\nWe would like to invite your family to plant a shade tree at the Surrey Centre Cemetery. We are going to begin by planting twelve shade trees to grow Surrey’s urban forest. City of Surrey staff will provide all tools and training.  Planters will work as family units (up to five people) to plant one large tree. Wear sturdy shoes and dress for the weather. The event will run rain or shine\, but could be cancelled in high winds. Pre-registration required for all families. We will be meeting at Kokanee Creek Park to learn all about the returning Kokanee salmon! We’ll join head naturalist Joanne Siderius for a tour of the spawning channels and an up close look at the salmon. DESCRIPTION:Explore Capilano River Regional Park \nOn this Explorer Day\, we’ll have an opportunity to see\, hear\, smell\, touch\, and explore life in the temperate rainforest. We’ll enjoy fun hands-on discovery and learning activities led by a park interpreter amongst the trickling streams\, giant trees and trails of Capilano River Regional Park in North Vancouver. \nIn order to maintain safe physical distancing\, this Explorer Day will be a little different than usual. We will have 2 groups\, each with a max. number of 6 people including parent/guardian\, that will go on a one hour tour. Tour #1 will be from 10:00 to 11:00\, and Tour #2 from 11:00 to 12:00. We recommend taking the time before or after your tour to visit beautiful Capilano Lake\, the reservoir where our drinking water in Vancouver comes from! See photo below. \nWe are recommending that only one parent accompany their child/children on the tour\, to maximize the number of children able to participate in this program. We will attempt to combine similar ages of children in the 2 tour groups. A waitlist will be kept in case we have more interested families than spots available. \nMeeting location: Capilano Hatchery\, 4500 Capilano Park Road\, North Van. Use the park entrance at the intersection of Capilano Road and Mt Crown Road and proceed to the end of the road to find the hatchery building. See attached map. If you are coming by public transit\, there are multiple routes to access the Hatchery. Please check out the TransLink website to see which route works best for you. \nDress for the weather. This tour will go rain or shine. The pathways in the park are gravel so wear closed-toed shoes with some grip if possible. \nCovid 19. To keep us all safe throughout the walk\, families will stay together. Parents/guardians will be responsible for maintaining 6 ft. distance from the interpreter and other families. Face masks are welcome\, but not required. Our special guests will be Nature Mentors from Echo Ecological who will lead us on a Nature Scavenger Hunt throughout the park. We’ll play games along the way and discover all sorts of cool things\, such as different kinds of bird nests!\n\nMeeting place: We’ll meet on the south side of the Park\, which is at 19th Ave. near Hull St. See map here. There is parking on East 19th. For bus travel\, the # 20 (Victoria Drive\, disembark at Victoria Diversion)\, #7 (Nanaimo St\, disembark at E. 20th)\, # 9 and #99 (Broadway\, disembark at Victoria\, 10-15 min walk) will all get you there. SkyTrain stations Commercial-Broadway and Nanaimo are both about 1 km from the meeting spot. Please check Translink for more details.\n\nDress for the weather and wear shoes that you don’t mind getting a little wet. This Explorer Day will go ahead if light rain is forecast\, but we will cancel if heavier rain is expected.\n\nTo keep us all safe during the Covid 19 pandemic\, we will maintain physical distancing by congregating in a large circle of family groups 6 feet apart. Please bring a blanket and all the food needed for your family; we will not be sharing food. For the Scavenger Hunt\, families will aim to stay in their family bubble. DESCRIPTION:Family Fun Day! \nWe will be having a family picnic and sandcastle contest at Saratoga beach! Biologist Amber Stroeder will also be joining us as a guest leader so we can learn about the different types of beach ecosystems that exist at Saratoga (sandy\, rocky\, tidal pool). The purpose of this event will be to reconnect with our members in a fun and safe way while also learning more about beach ecosystems. \nWe will meet in front of the washrooms at the green and blue driftwood post at the Saratoga Beach Access Park (down Seaman Rd). We are asking families to bring their own sandcastle building supplies (buckets\, shovels) and sanitation supplies (hand sanitizer\, disinfecting wipes). Masks are invited but not required. Families are also reminded to bring proper beach attire (hats\, sunglasses\, sunscreen\, etc.) along with water\, snacks\, and lunch. They have worked really hard this year\, travelled across BC and done great in competitions. This is a little different focus then most Explorer Days events but we think it is a great way to learn about another community organization\, have fun outside with our families\, and promote building an inclusive community\, so we hope many of you can come out to learn some new skills from the team. \nSunday March 15th from 1;20-2;20 we are to meet them at the field behind Walnut park school beside the big Christian reformed church.
