SUMMARY:MERRITT - Christmas Bird Count for Kids
DESCRIPTION:Christmas Bird Count for Kids \nAlan Burger (Nicola Naturalist Society) and Loretta Holmes (Wildlife Technician Upper Nicola Band) will be our mentors. We should have plenty of knowledgeable birders present to share their passions about birds with us! We will be visiting two locations 15 minutes from town to look\, hear and learn about overwintering birds. We will be filling out a Christmas kids Bird Count form. We will have two spotting scopes and binoculars for every child. \nLocation: meet at 10am at NVIT (lower parking lot) and we will convoy to our location (TBD but within a 15 minute drive from Merritt). We should be out for two hours. \nWhat to expect and what to bring: Please pack snacks\, water and something warm to drink and dress appropriately for the weather. Luckily the weather will be on the warmer side (forecast of 0 degrees C and overcast). We will try to make it as accessible for all. However depending on the weather there may be snow on the ground making walking a bit more difficult. We will be bringing one or two spotting scopes and are working on finding binoculars for each family to share. If you have a set of your own please bring them! \nThe event will be entirely outside and there will be lots of room to social distance.

Langley will be having a bird count on Jan 1 for those that are able to attend. \nChristmas Bird Count for Kids 2021 – Stanley Park \nCalling all young birders! Join us online alongside other families and experts for this annual winter bird survey event. After a quick introduction to bird identification where you’ll learn to tell your Kinglets from Kingfishers\, we will split into groups and head into the forest and foreshore for a 45-minute bird counting adventure then regroup to share our findings. Check out the downloadable resources below to enhance your experience! \nThis program is free for registration and is a collaboration between Birds Canada\, NatureKids BC\, and the Stanley Park Ecology Society. Register HERE. \nLocation:  We will meet at the Stanley Park Dining Pavilion (located at 610 Pipeline Road).  Please try to arrive at least 15 minutes in advance of the program. The whole program will be delivered outdoors\, so please dress for the weather.  \n\nThis program will follow approved COVID protocols\, and attendees must respect these protocols to participate in the program.  To make everyone comfortable\, we will encourage distancing and will be keeping group sizes low to accommodate this.

DESCRIPTION:Haro Woods Planting Extravaganza! \n\nOn this Explorer Day\, we will put environmental stewardship into practice again with our Nature Mentor Lindsay Coulter. We will be planting native plants in areas cleared of ivy to replenish the foliage and improve habitat for wildlife!  The more plants we plant\, the more oxygen in the air and the more we tackle climate change. Come and help make a difference!\n\n\nRSVP here.  \nLindsay is a volunteer Lead Steward for Saanich Parks in Haro Woods. She is also the former David Suzuki’s Queen of GreenTM\, a naturalist\, educator\, facilitator\, writer\, and parent. Her work has been to coach\, mentor and educate parents\, teachers\, and childcare staff to foster a deep connection with the living world. She believes nature is the classroom\, a teacher\, and a healer.\nFor more info on other volunteer stewardship opportunities and to learn more about Haro Woods. \nWHERE: Eagle Rock (inside the woods off Finnerty Rd.). Look for a Haro Woods green sign marker at trailhead off newly paved walkway/bike trail which runs along Finnerty Road.  Metered spaces are available at UVic daycare (3889 Finnerty Rd) or you may be able to park in the neighbourhood and walk. DESCRIPTION:See Salmon Spawning at Stoney Creek \nThis is the peak time for salmon spawning and we are thrilled to have connected with Nature Mentors\, father and son George and Luka Kovacic who will give us a tour of Stoney Creek. Luka\, age 12\, is passionate about BC salmon and monitors their return to Stoney Creek on a regular basis. Although numbers of returning salmon are down this year\, Stoney Creek is one of the few places close to Vancouver that the amazing life cycle of Pacific salmon can still be seen. \nRegister here. \nMeeting Location and Directions: Stoney Creek borders Burnaby and Burquitlam. We will meet at Oakdale Park\, in the parking lot at the front of the park. \nIf driving\, there are 3 route options. See map below. From East Vancouver for example\, the drive is approx 18 – 25 minutes. \nIf using transit\, the Burquitlam Skytrain Station is a 15-minute walk from the park. \nWhat to bring: Water and snack. Perhaps an umbrella. \n \nWhat to wear: As it is likely to be raining at least part of the time\, dress appropriately for the weather; layered clothing might be helpful too. Boots or waterproof shoes are recommended. Although Luka will be going into the creek\, we will stay on the trails and paths. DESCRIPTION:Hikin’ for Lichen \nWe are happy to welcome Rob Macrae for a crisp fall walk at Sproule Creek Trail. We will be looking for different species of lichens and mushrooms as we observe how the forest is changing as we step into winter. Rob is an  instructor in the Integrated Environmental Planning program at Selkirk College and is best known for his popular mushroom hunting walks in the spring and fall. We will be focusing on lichens as we are a bit late to capture many of the fall mushroom species\, but you never know what we might find!   \nRSVP: https://forms.gle/8bR4VYyWobaCyvXK7 \nLocation & Directions:  Turn onto Taghum Frontage Road from Highway 6 near Nelson (across from Taghum Shell). Find more trail info here. \nPlease be sure to dress for the weather\, this event will run rain or shine. \nThere is paved road access to the trailhead parking lot. The trail is easy and relatively level\, but with some stairs and short steeper sections that would not be suitable for strollers or wheelchairs. We will take a walk along the river to view the salmon and head to the Nature House for some more exploration.  The bald eagles and seagulls will be starting to arrive to feast on the salmon carcasses so it might be stinky.\n\nMore details to follow and please RSVP here. \nWHEN: Saturday\, November 6th\, 9:30 ~ 10:30am ; Please try to arrive by 9:15am so we can sign in and start on time with the interpreter. \nWHERE: Meet at the river side of the Main Shelter/Washroom area just off of the main parking lot. \nCOME PREPARED: Wear warm layers for being outdoors in the woods. It can be cold next to the river! Bring binoculars if you have some in case you want to see across the estuary.  Note that the washrooms at the Nature House are closed\, but there are washrooms at the entrance to the Park. \nDIRECTIONS to Goldstream Provincial Park:\nIf coming from downtown Victoria\, take Highway 1 past exit 14 and stay on Highway 1 until you see a sign for Goldstream Provincial Park and a turn off to the right (Finlayson Arm Road). DESCRIPTION:Halloween Hike at Whyte Lake \nWhat better thing to do on the morning of Hallowe’en\, Oct. 31\, than go on a hike! We are thrilled to have Stephen Hui\, author of “Destination Hikes In and Around Southwestern British Columbia” to guide us on this fall hike. This is a great opportunity to learn from an expert about hiking while we explore this scenic area of wetlands and forest. And you’ll get home in plenty of time to get ready for Trick or Treating! \nThis 5 Kms hike will take approx. 2 hours. Our destination will be the small\, peaceful Whyte Lake in the hills of West Vancouver. On the trail we’ll pass old growth forest groves of Western Cedar and Douglas Fir\, and see several old growth giants. We’ll also look for signs of fall in the area as we hike. \nPlease note: The path has some uphill areas\, and the elevation and length of the hike may be difficult for some of our younger members. We are thrilled that the Still Moon Arts Society has offered to facilitate this Explorer Day. Some of you may remember them from our Renfrew Ravine Native Planting & Invasive Ivy Pull last fall. \nStill Moon Arts Society is an organization that inspires vibrant and connected communities by creating artistic experiences and nurturing a passion for nature. DESCRIPTION:What’s Your Favorite Mushroom? \nMushrooms love this wet\, west coast weather and with our Nature Mentor Ludovic Le Renard\, we’ll learn where to find dozens of BC’s mushroom species nestled in the forest of the UBC campus\, and how to safely identify these fabulous fungi. We’ll collect our own specimens for further study when we return to our starting point. We may even discover our favourite mushroom! \nLudo is passionate about fungi\, from the largest conks on trees to the microscopic moulds in our fridges. Ludo is currently a postdoctoral fellow at UBC where he is researching what fungi have been up to in the last 150 millions of years. \nRegistration will be limited to 8 families. If you are registered for the North Shore Mushroom Walk and Origami Explorer Day on Nov. 7\, we ask that you don’t register for this event to give more of our families a chance to learn about mushrooms this fall. The session will be hosted by our very own alumna Maja Lampa.\n\nThe Starfish Canada celebrates young environmental leaders by connecting them with a platform for storytelling\, and environmental advocacy among a community of change-makers.\n\nEach of our voices can have an impact. Come find out how these young leaders made a difference in the world around them. Register here.\n \n\n\nKate O’Connor\nKate believes that in order to take meaningful climate action\, we need elected officials who understand the urgency of the climate crisis. When the B.C. 2020 provincial election was called\, Kate ran as the Green Party candidate in Saanich South\, and became the youngest candidate in provincial history. Over the course of her campaign\, she advocated for a transition to a just and green economy through ending oil and gas subsidies and reinvesting in tech and renewable energy sectors. She is also a leader and advocate for intergenerational leadership and youth participation in politics. Kate now works as the constituent advocate for Saanich North and the Islands and is learning about the day -to-day impacts provincial legislation has on citizens. Kate firmly believes that engaging young people in the political process and electing leaders who understand the urgency of the climate crisis are crucial parts of the fight to save the natural environment.\nSofia Slater\nSofia is a student from Metro Vancouver\, British Columbia. She is currently studying Environment and Business at the University of Waterloo. She is passionate about environmental sustainability and showing people that everyone has the ability to make a positive impact on the planet. She has spoken at events ranging from 10 to over 5\,000 people on how consumer choices do have the power to create lasting environmental change. She loves introducing people to the power of the outdoors when it comes to inspiring people to want to protect the planet. \nTessica Tuong\nTesicca is working hard to build a brighter future for the community. From affordable housing\, to fighting the climate crisis\, to building partnerships across the community that make a real difference — Tesicca is fighting for you.
