SUMMARY:VANCOUVER - Helping out an Orchard
DESCRIPTION:Helping out at Copley Community Orchard  \nWe’ll meet at the Copley Community Orchard\, a 1.2 acre organic orchard in east Vancouver. The orchard is a haven of fruit trees\, berry bushes and other perennial plants\, as well as having a Seed Pantry and Library and mason bee houses\, that all create a beautiful and productive community hub. Volunteers maintain the orchard and provide educational workshops. Our guide\, Tanya\, will take us for a tour of the property and then we’ll do some light weeding to help keep the orchard healthy. We’ll also be able to take some fruit home with us! \nCopley Community Orchard is a non-profit society run 100% by volunteers. \nMeeting location: The orchard is situated between Walker St. and Copley St\, and Vanness Ave. and East 19th Ave. See map. Parking is available on Walker St. \nTransit: The Nanaimo skytrain station is close by. The #7 Nanaimo St. bus stops close by as well. \nWashrooms can be found at the Trout Lake Concession at E. 19th and Marshall St\, about a 5 to 7 minute walk. See map. \nWhat you’ll need: \n* Wear clothes that you don’t mind getting dirty. \n* Dress for the weather – we’ll go in light rain. \n* Wear closed-toed shoes. \n* Although there are gardening gloves for adults available at the orchard\, there are none for children\, so pls bring your own if you have some\, and some to share if you have more than you need. \n* A yoghurt size container for your fruit. \nRegister here. \n  \nAlso\, the orchard has a food sharing box. Feel free to bring some food\, either packaged or fresh (nothing that needs to be refrigerated)\, for people in the neighbourhood who use this community service.

DESCRIPTION:Join us with False Creek Friends as we learn about some of the weird and wonderful species in our local waters\, how scientists collect data in awkward places like the ocean\, how to use the iNaturalist App\, and how to pronounce megalopae (Dungeness Crab Larvae). By attracting these crabs and other species through a light trap\, we will collect data about the health and wellbeing of the Salish Sea. We are excited that our findings will be part of a province-wide project\, The Sentinels of Change Light Trap Project! \nRemember to bring shoes with good grip as we will be on a wharf\, a Personal Flotation Device (PFD) for your child(ren) (optional)\, and a cellphone to use the iNaturalist app if you have one (if not\, we will have one for you to use). \nLocation: Heather Civic Marina\, 600 Stamps Landing\, east side of False Creek \nRegister here. \nOr email vancouver@naturekidsbc.ca for more info. \nThis Explorer Day may be best suited for children ages 7+\, but all ages are welcome\, including teens. \nThis Explorer Day will be limited to a maximum of 12 children.

DESCRIPTION:Family Fun Fishing Day \nThere is this amazing program and collaboration Nature Kids is doing with Fresh Water Fisheries Society of BC\, teaching our kids how to fish! \nWe will get 45 min of instruction and then we’ll have 1.5 hours of fishing time in their fully stocked fishing ponds! Day will Include information about their organization\, fish identification\, how to properly handle a fish\, basic tackle and casting lessons\, and safety and a guided fishing time at our stocked ponds. \nLocation: Onsite at their fishery ponds (which are fully stocked ensuring a few catches!) 34345 VYE ROAD\, ABBOTSFORD\, BC \nCost: $10 / per child \nDetails: This day will be held rain or shine and run fully outdoors.
