SUMMARY:NANAIMO
DESCRIPTION:Building Wood Duck Nest Boxes and learning about Wood Ducks\n\n\nPerhaps some of you know the wetland behind Oliver Woods park – in past years there have been a number of Wood Ducks that come there to nest. Urban Development has put a little pressure on these beautiful ducks\, who only nest in holes in trees. Our club will be partnering with the City of Nanaimo to build 5 nest boxes and place them around the wetland for the Ducks to nest in. We will be building the boxes ourselves (if anyone has an extra drill they are willing to bring along to use\, that would be much appreciated). I will send more information about that in the coming weeks.\n\nWe will also look around the wetland to see natural nesting sites and to learn a bit about Wood Ducks and other ducks that use this wetland. Why do the ducks come here and not other wetlands? What exactly do they need to find a good place to make a nest and raise babies?\n\nIf we have some extra time on our hands we will be playing some games in the woods by the park (if the kids can be tempted away from the playground).\n\nIf you are interested in participating please respond to the RSVP form ASAP. We might have to limit participation in building the boxes for safety reasons.\n\nLocation: Oliver Woods Community Centre \n\n\n\n\nSo Mark your Calendars for Sunday April 07 from 9 – 11AM ((I know this is not our usual time\, but this is the only time available for us to use a room in Oliver Woods Centre to build our boxes).\n\nAnd here is an adorable video of some Wood Duck ducklings leaving their nest – this is a ‘must watch’!\nhttps://www.youtube.com/watch?time_continue=3&v=Jhp7vwvAic4

SUMMARY:SALMON ARM
DESCRIPTION:Adopt-a Nest Box Program \n\nDetails: Our mentor\, Di Wittner\, will explain details about Nest boxes\, their need and what to look for throughout the summer. Each family can decide how many boxes they would like to monitor throughout the summer. Ideally if you can visit your boxes once every 2-3 weeks to record what is happening. If you would just like to come and learn about the program and not monitor boxes that is great too!\n\nWhat to bring: Dress for weather\, might need rubber boots to get to some boxes. Snacks\, water\, binoculars if you have them! We might be able to arrange with the Nature center to borrow them each time you come in the summer if you do not own any\n\n\nPlace: Meet at the parking lot at the warf beside Brighouse Nature Centre\n\n\nPlease tell your friends as we could really use more volunteers this summer and it is a fun thing to do!!

SUMMARY:KELOWNA
DESCRIPTION:Lost Lake Snake Hunt \nOur annual snake hunting adventure at Lost Lake!  We will hike in to the lake from the access point on June Springs Rd (approx half an hour)\, learning about plants\, animals\, and the history of the area.  This is in the middle of the burn zone from the 2003 fire\, so we will talk a bit about the role fire has on forests and the steps of regrowth.  Once we get to the lake\, we will ready out nets and catch anything we find; snakes\, frogs\, bugs\, tadpoles\, and more!  I will bring containers so we can all look at what we find before releasing it back where it was found. \nThe hike is easy enough to do in rubber boots\, or you can bring a change of footwear for when we get there.  The ground there is also spongy enough to go barefoot if you don’t mind hauling home muddy kids!  Also make sure to wear shorts or pants that can roll up as we will be getting right into the water. \nThe trail access point is somewhat difficult to find if you’ve never been there before\, so we will be meeting at the East Kelowna Baseball Field parking lot and carpooling to the trail.  There is not a lot of space to park there\, so the fewer vehicles the better.  Meet at the parking lot at 12:30 pm.  If you miss the carpool group\, the address of the trail access is 4406 June Springs Rd.  When parking\, do not completely block access to the roadway.\n\nCameras are a must for this adventure!  As well\, please remember to wear sunscreen\, bring a water bottle\,  and have weather-appropriate clothing for the hike.

SUMMARY:VICTORIA
DESCRIPTION:Garry Oak Meadow Celebration\n\nWe have been invited by the Friends of Uplands Park (FOUP) to join in their 2019 Garry Oak Meadow Celebration at Uplands Park\, in Victoria. This is our chance to engage in some local stewardship activities.  Let’s make a difference!\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nTogether with the community\, we will celebrate our local Garry Oak Ecosystems (GOE) and hone our stewardship skills by helping out with invasive removal at Uplands Park. Plants like English ivy and Himalayan blackberry threaten to take over other plants in this fragile ecosystem.\n\nThere will be music (Bald Eagles soft rock band)\, food\, drinks\, displays\, activities\, prizes and nature walks focusing on wildflowers and the Garry Oak Ecosystem (GOE) through Uplands Park. This park is probably the best example of the endangered GOE with 24 rare plants and also includes a rocky marine foreshore\, Cattle Point.\n\nWe will meet up with Margaret Lidkea (the Chair of FOUP) first\, who will guide us to our work area. We will work for about an hour pulling ivy/weeds and then join in the festivities.\n\nThis event is open to the public. Last year I believe about 300 people were in attendance.\n\nWHEN: Sunday\, April 28th\, noon – 2 pm (the event runs until 3 pm so you are welcome to stay longer!)\n\nWHERE: Meet in field on Beach Drive at the entrance to Cattle Point. I will have a big NatureKids sign with me to put up by our work area.\n\nMAP LINK: https://goo.gl/maps/gbk3uhMqKRB2\n\nCOME PREPARED: Don’t wear your favourite clothes! You will probably get dirty and sometimes it’s easy to snag clothes when you are in the thick of vegetation. Safety glasses are recommended if you have some\, but not necessary.\nAs mentioned\, gloves and tools will be provided.

We will be joining Margaret Corsan for a wildflower walk.\n\nLocation: Meet at the end of York Rd (off of Trillium Terrace\, off of Lakes Rd). Parking is a little tricky\, there isn’t a lot of space.\n\nCome dressed for the weather. Strollers are not recommended. Trails are kept very narrow to avoid damaging any of this sensitive ecosystem. Bring a camera to take pictures of the wild flowers and maybe binoculars in case we see a Blue Bird\n\nThis is a permit only park that isn’t open to the public. Don’t miss out on this rare chance to see this special place. Check it out online at  http://www.natureconservancy.ca/en/where-we-work/british-columbia/featured-projects/cgop/

SUMMARY:NANAIMO
DESCRIPTION:Plant Ecology at Beach Estates Park \nJoin us on May 5 at one of Nanaimo’s hidden gems: Beach Estates Park. Research Ecologist Sari Saunders will lead our group on a plant ecology tour\, looking at the kinds of plants we will find in different places (exposed sites\, sheltered locations\, wet versus dry\, close to the ocean\, etc).  We will learn a bit about what different plants can tell you about the the local ecology\, for instance the type of soil\, or whether the site is disturbed or not. Sari will bring along some measuring equipment that she uses in the field and will show us some of what she does in her job as a research ecologist. If you have them\, bring along a plant guide and your magnifying glasses or a field lens. Also\, bring your sketch book and some pencils to make sketches!
