SUMMARY:Virtual Ecosystem Explorer Day - #1 Oceans: Deep Sea Exploration with E/V Nautilus
DESCRIPTION:Join us for a Virtual Ecosystem Explorer Day! This is the first virtual event of a four part series that will run during fall and winter of 2023/2024! Our focus will be on ecosystems!  \nExplore the deep sea with us! Meet some of the crew members of E/V Nautilus – a team of scientists\, engineers and educators exploring the Central and Eastern Pacific\, mapping unsurveyed seafloor and characterizing deep-sea habitats through detailed remotely operated vehicle (ROV) observation\, as well as integrating emerging technologies. \nThis eight month exploration started off the coast of British Columbia and provided support to Ocean Networks Canada’s (ONC) wired seafloor observatory\, where deployed technologies gather thousands of observations about dynamics across an entire tectonic plate. In addition to deploying\, recovering\, and providing maintenance for various observatory sensors and instruments via ROV dives\, the team will assisted in scientific seafloor surveys with biological and geological sampling\, including revisiting the spectacular Endeavour hydrothermal vent field. \nThis ship-to-shore interactions will last 30 minutes with time for an expedition update and audience-led Q&A about careers\, discoveries\, or the exploration process. Join us for an evening of ocean discovery! \nThe event will take place on Zoom. Click here to register!  \nThis event is for NatureKids BC members. Become a member today! \n

SUMMARY:TRICITIES - Bird Banding with WildResearch
DESCRIPTION:Enjoy an early morning of birding with WildResearch! See birds up close and learn about bird banding at the Iona Island Bird Observatory (IIBO). NatureKids will also enjoy an educational walk in the park.\n\n\nIIBO is the only migration monitoring station in BC that operates during both spring and fall migration. Data collected by these programs demonstrate the importance of Iona Island as a migration stopover site for thousands of migratory birds each year.\n\n\nThis event is limited to 25 participants.\n\n\nTo register email tricities@naturekidsbc.ca\n\n\nBanding station location\nWildResearch’s operates Iona Island Bird Observatory (IIBO) at Iona Beach Regional Park in Richmond. The other banding station that runs out of Colony Farm in Coquitlam is operated by the Vancouver Avian Research Centre (VARC); also a really beautiful place!\n\n\nJust a note that Iona Beach Regional Park isn’t accessible by transit. The closest station would be Templeton Station on the Canada Line\, but folks can carpool or bike the rest of the way. There is a lot of free parking though. After the tour\, families can explore the trails\, beach\, jetty\, and relax at the picnic tables.\n\n\nThis event is for NatureKids BC members. Become a member today! \n  \n
