SUMMARY:COWICHAN VALLEY - Junior Fossil Hunters
DESCRIPTION:Join the Cowichan Valley NatureKids Club and the Victoria Paleontology Society for an introduction to ancient life on Vancouver Island and fossil collecting in BC. \n\n\nWe will start with a ‘show and tell’ of fossils from this site (hands-on) and discuss what the fossils tell us about the ancient environment at this location. We will cover collecting laws in BC\, then go on a walk of the area to see what we find. No equipment is required; the best searching is done with our eyes\, and a fair amount of fossils collected on the mountain have been found on the surface. If something interesting is found\, we can discuss guidelines for leaving it verses extracting it. If extraction is appropriate\, we can provide equipment and instruct the collector on how to approach getting it out. After\, we will come together to share and identify anything found and demonstrate proper record keeping.\n\n\n\nRegistration is now closed for this event as spots are full.\nThis event is for NatureKids BC members. Become a member today! \n

SUMMARY:TRICITIES - Nocturnal Animals
DESCRIPTION:Join the TriCities Nature Club for a fun evening event! \n\nWe will walk around the lake and talk about the 4 B’s: beavers\, who are present in the lake\, bats\, birds\, and bears. If we are lucky\, we will spot some bats\, who arrive straight from Mexico! \n\nAs a matter of practice and experience\, we will use a bat monitor that detects bat sounds (echolocation) and identifies the types of bats. If that sounds good\, please register and walk with us! \nClick here to register!  \n\nNature Mentors: \n\n\nCarla Parr-Pearson – “For the past 7 years\, I’ve been involved in promoting bear awareness and safety efforts in the Tri-City area. Through years of collaboration with the City of Port Moody\, I’ve worked towards our shared goal of becoming a designated Bear Smart Community recognized by the province. My passion lies in fostering a harmonious coexistence between humans and bears.” \nJudy Taylor-Atkinson and Jim Atkinson – “Jim and I  have been working with municipalities and private landowners to help them co-exist with beavers for about 15 years. Jim has been bat monitoring for Burke Mountain Naturalists for 7 years and we assisted Port Moody to become certified as a BC Bat Friendly Community.  We also monitor the Great Blue Heron Colony\, in Port Moody\, for Environment Canada since 2015.” \n\n  \n
