SUMMARY:NELSON - Rixen Creek Farm Sanctuary
DESCRIPTION:Join us for a special morning at Rixen Creek Farm Sanctuary\, nestled alongside a peaceful creek and home to a variety of friendly rescued animals. \nYou’ll get to meet goats\, sheep\, mini pigs\, turkeys\, rabbits\, and ducks in the peaceful setting of the sanctuary. Our host\, Deborah Nasmyth\, will introduce each animal by name and share their stories and fun facts. She’ll also lead a guided tour of the farm. If time allows\, and the group remains calm and quiet\, small groups may have a chance to enter the enclosures to gently pet or feed some of the animals. Please remember\, this is a sanctuary — a safe place where animals are here to live out their lives in peace. Kindness\, respect\, and mindfulness are expected during the visit. \nAs part of this experience\, NatureKids members will be invited to create a piece of art inspired by the animals they meet. Choose to paint a favourite animal on the farm or write a special message — your artwork will be painted on a small wood tile and displayed at the farm on one of the coops or fenced areas. All art materials will be provided. \nWe’ll take a short snack break between activities\, so please pack a healthy\, plant-based treat to enjoy. \nSuited For children aged 5 and 12. All children must be accompanied by an adult. \n Click here to register!   \n

SUMMARY:SALT SPRING - Discovering Secrets of Plants
DESCRIPTION:  \nAnother Explorer Day is on the horizon! In this month when we marvel over the beauty of so many flowering plants\, we shall seek out some of the shyer native species\, learn their names and find out how to recognize them by characteristics such as leaf patterns and flower petal arrangements. Surprisingly\, plants have a remarkable ability to grow quickly\, but how do they do this? What are the ingredients for their success? Are they important to us humans? We’ll check to see if some are struggling and determine whether we can assist them by removing invasive weeds\, those bully plants that don’t belong here. This is an important stewardship activity to learn about maintaining biodiversity and keeping our parks as nature intended them. Creating forest creatures from the invasives we remove will be super fun!  \nWhen: Monday\, May 19  from 10 am til noon \nWhere: Meet us at the entrance to Mouat Park opposite the driveway to the pool on Rainbow Road.  Parking at the pool is recommended. \nWhat to wear: Dress for the weather with boots if necessary\, and a hat. What to bring: Garden gloves (we will be providing some)\, and pruners (if you have them) for use by the adults. Registration with Jean is really appreciated – jdwilkingm@gmail.com This event is for NatureKids BC members. Become a member today! \n

SUMMARY:VANCOUVER - The Secret of the Shorelines
DESCRIPTION:Low tides provide us with the opportunity to see animals and creatures that are usually underwater and not visible to us humans. We’ll see spiny sea stars\, 10 legged crabs\, all sorts of clams (some may spurt water at us)\, barnacles of all sizes (so many small ones at this time of year\, called “spat”)\, marine worms (some with tons of legs and others that live in tubes)\, and green\, brown and red seaweeds that are so fun to touch. We will also learn about the ways these creatures have adapted and evolved to be able to survive both underwater and on land. For example\, some attach themselves to rocks or burrow under the sand\, others cluster together inside their tightly closed shells. What animals do you think might want to eat these marine invertebrates (animals without a backbone) during the low tide?  \nOur Nature Mentors will reveal the secrets of this special rocky shoreline where life abounds. We are pleased to welcome Sheila Byers\, Reg. Biologist and author of The Rocky Shore at Stanley Park field guide\, and Sharon Adelman\, long-time Aquarium volunteer. \nClick here to register! \n  \n
