DESCRIPTION:Little Qualicum Falls hike. I am pleased to have a Mentor leading us. Lois Lecavalier. Here is her Bio\n\n“Mycology is my hobby and has been for 5 years now since I moved to Vancouver Island. I enjoy foraging for mushrooms and learning new species. There are thousands of fungi on Vancouver Island and more than 100 are edible. There are also many medicinals and mushrooms used as dyes. Hunting for mushrooms is an inexpensive\, healthy and useful hobby to get into and I look forward to introducing the children to it.  My own kids forage with me and they often find things I did not see. “

SUMMARY:VICTORIA
DESCRIPTION:Eagle Wing Tour – Marine bird and mammal life \nWe are super excited to offer this Explorer Day to join the award winning Eagle Wing Tours to view and learn about the diverse marine bird and mammal life in the coast around Victoria. We will have a two hour guided tour around the migratory bird sanctuaries in the harbour and out to Race Rocks Ecological Reserve. http://www.racerocks.ca/home/ Our knowledgeable and enthusiastic naturalist guide on the boat will be Sydney McCabe of Eagle Wing Tours.\nPlease note that this tour is not a whale watch per se; we will focus on marine life that we discover in our near shore waters.) \nOur “floating classroom” -the luxury catamaran 4Ever Wild- has indoor and outdoor viewing areas and two bathrooms. \nEagle Wing is generously offering us this opportunity at a basic cost that covers their fuel charges (approx $25 per person— instead of the cost to the public of $100). \nBecause we can have a maximum of 50 people on the boat\, we will offer this Explorer Day to MEMBERS ONLY (children aged 5-12 and parent/guardian; no younger or older siblings). Sign up will be first come first served and advance payment will hold your spot (we will figure out logistics for payment soon.) We will be in touch to confirm with those who sign up and to detail further logistics. \nWe will also have a waitlist and if there is great demand we will try to secure a second sailing for another day \nWHEN: Saturday\, February 3rd\, 10-12. We will depart at 10. Arrive no later than 9:45 to get ready and sign waivers. \nCOST: ~$25 per person (including children) if all 50 spots on the boat are filled. Advance payment will be required to hold your spot and more details will follow once you are registered on this form. \nWHERE: Meet at the Eagle Wings Tour office at 12 Erie Street at Fisherman’s Wharf in Victoria (it is on the water; down the ramp and to the right). \nMore about Eagle Wing Tours at https://www.eaglewingtours.com

SUMMARY:NatureKids BC
DESCRIPTION:NatureKids BC and the Elders Council for Parks in BC are hosting an interactive puppet show\, “The Adventures of Cheetwoot the\nBear.”  The show is designed to help children learn about the natural diet and behavior of bears\, and the importance of preventing bears from entering our communities.  Set in the past on Mount Seymour\, Willie the Wolf warns Cheetwoot to stay away from humans\, but despite the teachings Cheetwoot received from his mother on how to find natural food in the forest\, he can’t resist the smell of a human’s huckleberry pie. \nSuitable for children age 3-7; all children must be accompanied by a parent or guardian.  The show will be followed by a bear food scavenger hunt outside. Please feel free to bring snacks for your children or grandchildren. \nRVSP to info@naturekidsbc.ca. Space is limited. \nLocation: 1620 Mount Seymour Road\, North Vancouver. \nSponsored by the Elders Council for Parks with CD Music by the North Shore Celtic Ensemble.

SUMMARY:EASTERN FRASER VALLEY
DESCRIPTION:The buds are swelling\, and the birds are busying themselves with calling for mates and searching for nest sites – spring is almost here. Among the trees and bushes animals hide\, sleep\, build nests\, drink nectar\, eat luscious berries\, and pluck plump insects from under leaves. \nHabitat loss means that this idyllic setting is becoming scarcer\, and we think our NatureKids are exactly the conservation heroes needed to create just such a place\, a hide-and-seek for birds and other critters. \nPlease join us for a stewardship planting in one another’s good company and learn from our remarkable and amusing nature mentor\, Gord Gadsden\, on March 17 from 1-3 p.m. at the Cheam Lake Wetlands. This event is rain or shine as the time is right to allow the roots to establish themselves\, while the rain is plentiful.

SUMMARY:COMOX VALLEY
DESCRIPTION:Fossil Hunt in Seal Bay\n\nWe’ll comb the beach at Seal Bay looking for volcanic rocks and fossil-bearing cobbles carried to this area by a massive glacier that once covered the entire island. We are fortunate to be joined on this adventure by Randal Mindell – a local geologist\, who will be our “Nature Mentor” for the afternoon.\n\nLocation: meet at 1:30 at the Seabank Road Entrance of Seal Bay Park (this is not the main parking lot – take Waveland Rd to Seabank Rd).
