SUMMARY:Snakesss in BC\, Threatening or Threatened? (Virtual Explorer Day)
DESCRIPTION:Snakesss in BC\, Threatening or Threatened? \n\nJoin us for another amazing virtual event with snake biologist and researcher Dana Eye. We will discuss the nine snake species found in BC and what makes them special. Dana will also share what a day in the field looks like for a snake biologist and why it is important we study them! Get ready for an interactive presentation filled with videos and photos of snakes and other desert dwelling creatures!!\n\nAbout our Nature Mentor:\n\nDana is a biologist pursuing her Master of Science at Thompson Rivers University in Kamloops\, British Columbia. In 2017\, with the support of Osoyoos Indian Band and Nk’Mip Desert Cultural Centre\, Dana began working on the first study on pregnant female rattlesnakes in Western Canada. To date\, she and her colleagues have successfully tracked the movements of twenty-five pregnant female rattlesnakes and found 18 birthing sites. This research will provide critical information for future management decisions and conservation of this threatened species.\n\nRegistration details coming soon!

SUMMARY:VANCOUVER - North Shore Black Bears
DESCRIPTION:Learning about North Shore Black Bears \nOn this (rescheduled) Explorer Day we’ll go to Rice Lake in North Vancouver with guides Luci and Danielle from the North Shore Black Bear Society. Our guides will teach us about bear biology\, behaviour\, seasonal habits\, and what bears like to eat. We’ll also learn to be bear detectives so we can tell if bears have been using the area. Most importantly\, we’ll learn about best practices for living and playing in bear country and what to do if you encounter a bear.\n \nWe will be walking on forest trails so dress for the weather and wear sturdy shoes that you don’t mind getting a bit wet. This Explorer Day will be limited to 20 people so we ask that only 1 parent attend to allow for more families to join. \n Please RSVP here. \nFor more information about all the great work the North Shore Black Bear Society is doing to protect black bears\, see https://northshorebears.com/home. \nSafety! Luci is certified in bear safety and awareness with the Commercial Bear Viewing Association. Our group will use our voices to let all the wildlife know that humans are in the area\, so we won’t be surprising any bears. Luci will also be carrying bear spray\, although it is extremely unlikely this will be needed.   \nMeeting Location\nWe will meet at the Rice Lake Gate Picnic Area which is at the Lower Seymour Conservation Area\, 2369 Lillooet Rd\, North Vancouver. From Vancouver\, take the Second Narrows Bridge\, turn right on Mountain Highway and head up the hill\, then turn right at Lynn Valley Road followed by another right at Peters Road. Follow signs to the parking lot. There is plenty of parking as well as bathrooms at the Lower Seymour Conservation Area. \nSee attached map for location & directions from Lions Gate Bridge and Second Narrows Bridge.\n\nFor public transit\, the 229 bus from Phibbs Exchange in North Vancouver will drop you off at the park. Check translink.ca for details. \nCOVID-19\nMasks are optional and preferred for adults and children 6 years and older. Please do not register for this event if you or anyone in your family bubble has symptoms of COVID-19 such as coughing\, fever\, vomiting\, diarrhea\, loss of taste/smell\, or if you have been in contact with someone who has such symptoms or tested positive. \nThank you to Tony Joyce for this beautiful bear image.

SUMMARY:VICTORIA - Ivy Pull at Haro Woods
DESCRIPTION:Let’s tackle that Ivy\, Haro Woods Saanich \nOn this Explorer Day\, we will put environmental stewardship into practice with our Nature Mentor Lindsay Coulter. \nLindsay is a volunteer Lead Steward for Saanich Parks in Haro Woods. She is also the former David Suzuki’s Queen of GreenTM\, a naturalist\, educator\, facilitator\, writer\, and parent. Her work has been to coach\, mentor and educate parents\, teachers\, and childcare staff to foster a deep connection with the living world. She believes nature is the classroom\, a teacher\, and a healer. \nEnglish Ivy will be our focus on this day.  We will be clearing ivy to stop it from spreading throughout the park and instead make way for native plants to thrive and become established.  Ivy is invasive and is choking out native plants. Throughout the year it grows a lot\, forming carpets that even climb trees! When it takes over a tree it makes that tree more vulnerable to environmental stressors like high winds or drought. It can kill a tree all together.  Later in the Fall\, we can replant areas that are cleared of ivy to replenish the foliage and improve habitat for wildlife! \nPlease RSVP here. \nFOR MORE INFO on other volunteer stewardship opportunities and to learn more about Haro Woods. \nWHEN: Saturday\, October 16th\, 1:00pm to ~ 2:30pm \nWHERE: Eagle Rock (inside the woods off Finnerty Rd.). Look for a Haro Woods green sign marker at trailhead off newly paved walkway/bike trail which runs along Finnerty. \nMAP LINK:  https://www.alltrails.com/trail/canada/british-columbia/haro-woods-park \nDIRECTIONS BY TRANSIT:  #11 bus until UVic daycare on Finnerty @Edgelow or metered spaces are available at UVic daycare (3889 Finnerty Rd). Also parking north on Edgelow in front of Arbutus Middle School. \nCOME PREPARED: Participants should dress for the weather. We will run rain or shine but not in high winds (above 60 km/hour) or a snow day. Bring garden or work gloves\, but there are some extras to loan (not kid-sized). Bring a snack and water. There are no washrooms. \nSAFETY PROTOCOLS: There will be a sign in sheet/waiver upon arrival. We will mostly stay in our family “pods” and social distance where possible. Masks are optional for adults\, but are highly recommended where distance cannot be maintained. We will be outdoors the entire time!

SUMMARY:VIRTUAL EXPLORER DAY - A Conversation Youth Environmental Changemakers
DESCRIPTION:A Conversation Youth Environmental Changemakers\n\nWe are pleased to be showcasing three of The Starfish Canada award recipients Kate O’Connor\, Sofia Slater and Tessica Tuong. Join us for an inspiring panel discussion session with these youth leaders as they share their stories and journeys. The session will be hosted by our very own alumna Maja Lampa.\n\nThe Starfish Canada celebrates young environmental leaders by connecting them with a platform for storytelling\, and environmental advocacy among a community of change-makers.\n\nEach of our voices can have an impact. Come find out how these young leaders made a difference in the world around them. Register here.\n \n\n\nKate O’Connor\nKate believes that in order to take meaningful climate action\, we need elected officials who understand the urgency of the climate crisis. When the B.C. 2020 provincial election was called\, Kate ran as the Green Party candidate in Saanich South\, and became the youngest candidate in provincial history. Over the course of her campaign\, she advocated for a transition to a just and green economy through ending oil and gas subsidies and reinvesting in tech and renewable energy sectors. She is also a leader and advocate for intergenerational leadership and youth participation in politics. Kate now works as the constituent advocate for Saanich North and the Islands and is learning about the day -to-day impacts provincial legislation has on citizens. Kate firmly believes that engaging young people in the political process and electing leaders who understand the urgency of the climate crisis are crucial parts of the fight to save the natural environment.\nSofia Slater\nSofia is a student from Metro Vancouver\, British Columbia. She is currently studying Environment and Business at the University of Waterloo. She is passionate about environmental sustainability and showing people that everyone has the ability to make a positive impact on the planet. She has spoken at events ranging from 10 to over 5\,000 people on how consumer choices do have the power to create lasting environmental change. She loves introducing people to the power of the outdoors when it comes to inspiring people to want to protect the planet. \nTessica Tuong\nTesicca is working hard to build a brighter future for the community. From affordable housing\, to fighting the climate crisis\, to building partnerships across the community that make a real difference — Tesicca is fighting for you. She founded CityHive\, a non-profit organization that directly engages young people when it comes to important decisions that affect their lives.

Rob is an  instructor in the Integrated Environmental Planning program at Selkirk College and is best known for his popular mushroom hunting walks in the spring and fall. We will be focusing on lichens as we are a bit late to capture many of the fall mushroom species\, but you never know what we might find!   \nRSVP: https://forms.gle/8bR4VYyWobaCyvXK7 \nLocation & Directions:  Turn onto Taghum Frontage Road from Highway 6 near Nelson (across from Taghum Shell). Then turn into Sproule Creek Road and drive 7km up. Near the end of the road\, as pavement turns to gravel\, watch for parking on your left. Find more trail info here. \nPlease be sure to dress for the weather\, this event will run rain or shine. \nThere is paved road access to the trailhead parking lot. The trail is easy and relatively level\, but with some stairs and short steeper sections that would not be suitable for strollers or wheelchairs. Please contact us if you have questions about the suitability of this hike for your family.
