DESCRIPTION:On Sunday June 4\, we will be heading out to the beach close to Lumberman’s Arch in Stanley Park to explore the intertidal zone. The tide will be at its lowest point (.8 ft) around 12:30 p.m.\, so we will follow the tide out starting at 11:45. \nLow tides give us the opportunity to see plants and animals that are usually covered by water. Animals have to be incredibly adaptive to survive during these hours. Can you think of some of the dangers they face when they are exposed like this? How might they protect themselves from these dangers? Our Nature Mentor\, Sharon Adelman\, a long-time volunteer with the Vancouver Aquarium\, will help us solve these mysteries of the intertidal zone. We’ll start off by learning about beach “etiquette” i.e.\, how we can explore the beach without harming any of the creatures who are struggling to survive in this fragile environment. \nExtra!! For families who are interested—and depending on the weather—we’ll meet at 11:15 for a ’bring your own lunch’ picnic at the meeting location. Food can also be purchased at the concession. DESCRIPTION:Learn about local plants with T’uy’t’tanat Cease Wyss on a walk at X̱wáýx̱way (Stanley Park). \n\n\n\n\n\nWe are very pleased to offer a plant walk with T’uy’t’tanat Cease Wyss in X̱wáýx̱way (Stanley Park) on Saturday\, June 17\, from 1:00 to 2:30 PM. As we walk\, T’uy’t’tanat Cease Wyss will share their knowledge of local plant ecology and plant connections to Indigenous teachings. \nT’uy’t’tanat Cease Wyss is an Indigenous Matriarch of the Skwxwu7mesh\, Sto:lo and Hawaiian people. Through their work as an ethnobotanist\, artist\, activist\, and community-based educator\, they strive to share Indigenous customs and teachings. In 2018\, Cease was the Indigenous storyteller in residence at the Vancouver Public Library. Cease is currently at the Vancouver Park Board residence in the Stanley Park fieldhouse. \nRegister here. SUMMARY:VANCOUVER - Bats and Bunnies
DESCRIPTION:We’ve been invited back to Copley Community Orchard (COO)\, this time to join them in a fun-filled morning exploring nature in the orchard\, learning about bats (did you know that there are bats all around us?) and enjoying some quality time with friendly pet rabbits! Families are also welcome to join orchard volunteers to water and weed after these events. Feel free to bring food if you’d like to stay for a picnic in the orchard. COO volunteers will be there until 1:00 PM. \nPlease see the following schedule. We will meet families there at 9:30; however\, if you’ve had the tour before\, you might prefer to come at 10. \n  \n1. Guided Nature Walk (9:30): \nWe’ll begin the day with a guided nature walk through the orchard. Kids will be able to observe and learn about various plants and trees. It’s fascinating to see how a small urban space can be home to so many plants and trees! \n  \n2. Bats BC Presentation (10:00): \nCOO has invited Bats BC\, a local organisation dedicated to bat conservation\, to give an interactive presentation. Kids will learn about the importance of bats in our ecosystem\, their unique behaviours\, and their role in pollination and insect control. \n  \n3. Bunny Friends (11:00): \nGet ready for some adorable furry friends! COO will set up a designated area where children can interact with friendly bunnies. Children will learn proper handling techniques and interesting facts about rabbits. \n4. Watering and Weeding. \nJoin COO volunteers in garden maintenance activities if you have time (this was a favourite activity of our kids last year!). \nRegistration for this event is now closed as spots are full.  \nThis event is for NatureKids BC members. Become a member today! \n

Sit back and soak up the seaside atmosphere or take a walk through the wooded upland area of the park. All campsites are within a five-minute walk of the beach\, which stretches for two kilometres. Grace holds a B.A. (English) and B.Ed (Teacher Certification) from Simon Fraser University. In addition to being the Communications Coordinator for ISCMV\, Grace is also the founder and President of Free the Fern Stewardship Society in South Vancouver. Prior to 2020\, Grace was an Elementary teacher specializing in teaching kids with learning disabilities. Now\, she uses her teaching skills to plan stewardship events and workshops. In addition to planning events\, Grace edits the content for ISCMV website\, newsletter\, and social media. She has a passion for bringing community together through stewardship and art. Grace enjoys sharing her nature photography online and teaching others how to weave with invasive ivy. \nShe lives in South Vancouver with her family\, adjacent to the beautiful Champlain Heights trail system.
