SUMMARY:RICHMOND - Nature Crafting with Invasive Plants
DESCRIPTION:Join us for a hands-on workshop where you’ll learn how to turn regionally invasive plants\, Horse Chestnut and Morning Glory\, into functional\, beautiful keychains. While working with these natural materials\, we’ll explore their histories\, ecological impacts\, and stories. \nParticipants will explore cordage weaving and basic woodworking. \nThis workshop is best suited for those aged 8+\, as cordage-making requires some dexterity. Pre-made cordage will be available for anyone who prefers it. The workshop also includes the use of low-powered electric drills. \nAbout the Facilitator:Joshua Ralph is a nature mentor and community-engaged eco-artist behind the Invasive Art Initiative. His work bridges ecology and creativity\, offering new ways to relate to “invasive species” through ethically harvested\, repurposed plant materials. Since 2021\, the traveling initiative has collaborated with nonprofits and community groups across the Lower Mainland to offer workshops\, demos\, and talks that challenge dominant narratives about environment\, colonization\, and human exceptionalism. \nLearn more at www.invasiveartinitiative.ca \nClick here to register! \n

SUMMARY:VANCOUVER - The Putting Green Trees Include Some Giants!
DESCRIPTION:On Saturday Sept 6 from 10:00 to 11:30\, join us in Stanley Park for “The Putting Green Trees Include Some Giants” with nature mentor and author\, Nina Shoroplova. Upon arrival\, families will receive a BINGO-like sheet of fascinating things to find in our meeting area. For example\, a tree with leaves edged in pink\, a cone as big as your shoe\, and  a tree you wouldn’t want to shake hands with! Families will have 30 minutes to try to find as many of the 24 items as possible\, which will be followed by a short talk by Nina about the area and its magnificent trees. We will then explore some more\, and we’ll end our time together with a very large group tree-hug! \n  \nNina Shoroplova has wandered through Vancouver’s urban forest for years and marvelled at the multitude of tree species that flourish here. Her love of the area led her to write Legacy of Trees: Purposeful Wandering in Vancouver’s Stanley Park (2020). The book covers “Stanley Park’s seawall and beaches\, wetlands and trails\, pathways and lawns in every season and every type of weather\, revealing the history\, beauty\, and botanical properties of many tree species.” We are thrilled to have Nina as our guide for this very special Explorer Day. \nClick here to register!
