DESCRIPTION:Did you know that water flowing into storm drains goes directly to local streams\, rivers\, and the ocean? That means anything poured or washed into a storm drain—paint\, soap\, oil\, litter\, or other pollutants—can harm fish and other wildlife. \nJoin us for a hands-on conservation activity as we work with the Cougar Creek Streamkeepers to help protect local waterways. We’ll be marking storm drains to remind people that only rain goes down the drain. DESCRIPTION:What creatures might we see? Three kinds of crabs (or their shells/exoskeletons); small and large anemones; red sea cucumbers; sea stars\, shallow water fish; clams; barnacles of all sizes; limpets\, green\, brown and red seaweeds\, and more! \n\nWhen: Sunday\, June 14\, 2026\, 8:45 – 10:45 AM.\nWhere: North Beach\, Glencoe Cove – Kwatsech Park\,  Gordon Head\, Saanich\n\n\n\nMeeting location: From the small parking lot\, take the Shoreway Beach Access trail (3 – 5 minute walk) that leads to a stairway. We’ll meet at the bottom of the stairs.\nParking: There is a small parking lot at the park entrance. There is also ample street parking close by on Shore Way and Gordon Point Drive.\n\n\n\n\nWho: All ages – bring the teens too! This is also a great Explorer Day to invite friends who aren’t NatureKids members. They can register at the same link.\nWeather: We go rain or shine! However\, this event will be canceled in the case of heavy rain. I will be in touch with you a few days before the event to confirm details.\nWhat to bring:\n\n\n\nYour own intertidal field guides if you have any\, but we will have some to share.\nSunscreen\, hat\, waterproof jacket depending on weather.\nFootwear that has a good grip and you don’t mind getting muddy or wet. Knee high boots if you’d like to explore a near shore rock ‘island.’\nA magnifying glass and camera can be useful. Binocs to see birds and marine mammals\, such as seals.\nSnacks and water. This sandy beach is a great place for a mid-morning picnic.\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nRegister Here \nWhat challenges do you think these underwater species face when exposed to the land and sky? To survive the low tides\, these species have to protect themselves from predators\, and prevent dehydration. Some of the many ways they do this are: attaching firmly to rocks and closing their protective “doors\,” burrowing beneath the sand\, sheltering under the moist seaweed\, and hiding in abandoned shells\, just to name a few! During this Explorer Day\, we’ll have the opportunity to observe some of these remarkable adaptations firsthand. \nThere will also be Scavenger Hunt sheets available for explorers of all ages. \nYou may be wondering why we’re starting so early on a Sunday morning! That’s due to the low tide—one of the lowest of the year—at 9:21 AM. Starting a little earlier gives us full access to the lowest parts of the shoreline before the tide starts to come back in. However\, don’t worry if you’re late – just come! \nThis beach is also a great place to dig up clay and try some modelling. Plus\, I’ve heard there is a lot of sea glass there\, which is always fun to find. Depending on the weather\, people might also want to go for a swim. \nLastly\, as we are all good ocean stewards\, we’ll have a container for any garbage we find on the beach. Just let an adult know if you see some garbage\, and we’ll collect it safely. \n

DESCRIPTION:The Comox Nature Club will be participating in the Big Canoe Paddle at Comox Lake!\n\n\nWhen: July 18th from 3pm – 6pm\nWhere: Cumberland Lake Park Campground\nWho: The Big Canoe Paddle is geared towards 3rd graders but because we have adults going it will be suitable for 6-12.\n\n\n\nThe Big Canoe Paddle from 3:30 to 5:30 for children over 6 requires one adult to accompany them.\nYou will notice on the sign up sheet a spot for your normal family sign up and then an added spot for the child(ren) paddling and the one adult accompanying.\nPlease include the ages of the child (you can leave your age out).  🙂\n\n\n\n\n\n\nThe event will be land activities\, beach play and enjoying the company of fellow nature lovers. While some are paddling we will continue the land and lake fun!  We will have a light snack and encourage families to pack a picnic dinner and a blanket.  Please reach out to us if you have any questions and I will do my best to answer them.  We do need a min of 8 people for the canoe and max of 13.  If the numbers are high we do have the opportunity to shorten our paddle time to give space for 2 trips (one group would do the loading of the canoe in the water and the other would do the clean up with paddling for both groups).\n\nRegister at the Google Form
