DESCRIPTION:Join the Cowichan Valley NatureKids Club and the Victoria Paleontology Society for an introduction to ancient life on Vancouver Island and fossil collecting in BC. \n\n\nWe will start with a ‘show and tell’ of fossils from this site (hands-on) and discuss what the fossils tell us about the ancient environment at this location. We will cover collecting laws in BC\, then go on a walk of the area to see what we find. No equipment is required; the best searching is done with our eyes\, and a fair amount of fossils collected on the mountain have been found on the surface. If something interesting is found\, we can discuss guidelines for leaving it verses extracting it. If extraction is appropriate\, we can provide equipment and instruct the collector on how to approach getting it out. DESCRIPTION:Join Kelowna NatureKids for our annual snake hunting adventure at Lost Lake! We will hike in to the lake from the access point on June Springs Rd (approx. half an hour)\, learning about plants\, animals\, and the history of the area. This is in the middle of the burn zone from the 2003 fire\, so we will talk a bit about the role fire has on forests and the steps of regrowth. Once we get to the lake\, we will ready out nets and catch anything we find; snakes\, frogs\, bugs\, tadpoles\, and more! SUMMARY:WILDROOTS -  Small living things that colour our spring!
DESCRIPTION:Spring is here and our forest is changing colour\, but why? The colouring of our forest is thanks to all the organisms\, including mosses\, lichens\, ferns\, conifers\, and flowering plants. The large ones are easy to spot\, but what about the smaller ones? We’ll be inspecting them more closely with magnifying lenses and more. We will collect small samples and learn to distinguish and interpret what they are! \nRSVP here \nFeatured nature mentor – Ludovic Le Renard: Ludo studied botany and mycology at UBC\, and is passionate about the small living plants and fungi\, especially under the microscope. He worked as a researcher at UBC until 2021\, and then worked for a startup developing medicines from mushrooms for the last two years. SUMMARY:SALT SPRING - Seashore Explorations
DESCRIPTION:June 9\, from 1 – 3\, at Baker Beach: Kathleen will lead an exploration of the Salt Spring Shore with guests Marine Biologist\, David Denning and Biologist\, Pat Miller. \nWhat could be more entertaining than a low tide at Baker Beach? “Well\, a seine pull!” exclaims David Denning\, enthusiastically\, and Baker is the best beach on Salt Spring for this kind of activity. \nMucking about on the tide flats with the herons and oyster catchers\, we’ll share our discoveries about the critters that live above\, on and below the sandy/muddy/rocky surfaces. We have nets for all\, a few pails\, and our expert mentors will use some of the tools of marine biology to explain the lifestyles of both the common and the unusual organisms that make Salt Spring their home. \nYou will need your rubber boots or other appropriate footwear for scrambling about on rocks and sharp barnacles\, some clothing layers\, maybe rain gear\, and of course a hat. \nDavid Denning is a marine naturalist and retired educational filmmaker who has lived on Salt Spring for 30 years. Pat Miller has a Master’s degree in Zoology with a long-standing fascination with intertidal flora and fauna\, and really enjoys beach seining with David. \nThe field trip is limited to 20 people and registration is required – please email Kathleen\,  khmaser@shaw.ca for details of our meeting place and to register. \n  \n
