SUMMARY:SALT SPRING - Seashore Explorations
DESCRIPTION:June 9\, from 1 – 3\, at Baker Beach: Kathleen will lead an exploration of the Salt Spring Shore with guests Marine Biologist\, David Denning and Biologist\, Pat Miller. \nWhat could be more entertaining than a low tide at Baker Beach? “Well\, a seine pull!” exclaims David Denning\, enthusiastically\, and Baker is the best beach on Salt Spring for this kind of activity. \nMucking about on the tide flats with the herons and oyster catchers\, we’ll share our discoveries about the critters that live above\, on and below the sandy/muddy/rocky surfaces. We have nets for all\, a few pails\, and our expert mentors will use some of the tools of marine biology to explain the lifestyles of both the common and the unusual organisms that make Salt Spring their home. \nYou will need your rubber boots or other appropriate footwear for scrambling about on rocks and sharp barnacles\, some clothing layers\, maybe rain gear\, and of course a hat. \nDavid Denning is a marine naturalist and retired educational filmmaker who has lived on Salt Spring for 30 years. Pat Miller has a Master’s degree in Zoology with a long-standing fascination with intertidal flora and fauna\, and really enjoys beach seining with David. \nThe field trip is limited to 20 people and registration is required – please email Kathleen\,  khmaser@shaw.ca for details of our meeting place and to register. \n  \n

SUMMARY:NELSON - Kootenay Gallery Broom Bash
DESCRIPTION:Are you a Kootenay Broom Buster? \nScotch broom is an escaped garden plant introduced from Europe that easily invades sunny\, disturbed sites such as rangelands\, roadsides\, and areas of recent logging. Scotch broom can increase the intensity of wildfires\, obstruct sightlines along roads\, and crowd out native plants that animals depend on. Now that’s a nasty invasive!\n \nNext month the Central Kootenay Invasive Species Society (CKISS) and the West Kootenay Naturalists are working together to remove scotch broom from a site in Castlegar and they’ve invited our club families to join them! Let’s work together to remove this invasive species and help our native plants to thrive. There is also a native plant garden to explore.\nCKISS will bring supplies\, but bring your own gloves if you have them\, especially for the kids as they may not have many small sizes.\n \nCLICK HERE TO REGISTER FOR THIS EVENT\n \nThis event is for NatureKids BC members. Become a member today! \n

SUMMARY:VANCOUVER - A Bat-tastic Morning at Copley Community Orchard!
DESCRIPTION:Hello Vancouver Families: On Saturday July 13\, we’ll visit the Copley Community Orchard in east Vancouver. Our nature mentor\, Tanya\, will start the morning with a tour of the property\, including many garden beds\, fruit-bearing bushes\, and fruit trees. Following the tour\, local bat expert Danielle Dagenais from Bats BC will tell us all about these little nocturnal creatures who play an important role in maintaining healthy ecosystems. For example\, did you know that bats can eat about 6\,000 to 8\,000 insects every night? Some local BC bat species are considered at risk\, and we’ll learn what we can do to help them. Danielle will bring some taxidermy bats in a glass case so we can see what they look like up close. After the bat workshop\, we’ll visit with a few live animals: a mini chicken\, a regular-size chicken\, and a rabbit. Lastly\, we’ll have the opportunity to join other volunteers in watering and weeding the garden beds – a favourite NatureKidsks activity during past visits to the orchard.  \nFeel free to bring food if you’d like to stay for a picnic in the orchard. Often\, a local music group starts performing at about 11:30. \nREGISTER HERE. \nMEETING LOCATION: The orchard is situated between Walker St. and Copley St; and Vanness Ave. and East 19th Ave. See attached map. Parking is available on Walker St. We will meet at the entrance to the orchard on Walker St. (See black arrow on map). \nTRANSIT: The Nanaimo SkyTrain station is close by. The #7 Nanaimo St. bus also stops close by See map.  \nWASHROOMS can be found at the Trout Lake Concession at E. 19th and Marshall St.\, about a 5-7-minute walk. See map. \nWHAT YOU WILL NEED: \n* Wear clothes that you don’t mind getting wet or dirty.  \n* Dress for the weather. \n* Wear closed-toed shoes. \n* Bring gardening gloves if you can. There will be some there. \nCancellation: Please inform us by email (vancouver@naturekidsbc.ca) if you are unable to attend this Explorer Day. \nLiability Waiver: Please read the attached Liability Waiver that you will be asked to sign at the Explorer Day.  \nLearn more about Copley Community Orchard here\, and to keep up with their regular activities check them out on Facebook and Instagram.  \nLooking forward to seeing some of you there! \nThis event is for NatureKids BC members. Become a member today!
