Scientists have been learning a lot about the intelligence of Crows and other members of the Corvid family of birds (including Jays\, Ravens and Magpies) that is absolutely fascinating.\n\nJoin us at Departure Bay beach around low tide to observe some interesting Crow behaviour with biologist Dr. Eric Demers. Eric will share with us some interesting facts about Northwestern Crows\, and we will do an observation exercise to see what behaviours we can recognize and what they might mean. Bring Binoculars if you have them \nAfterwards we will go for a nature walk/ scavenger hunt in Woodstream Park to search for signs of spring!

DESCRIPTION:Earth Day Fish Count \nWe are going to do the Millard-Piercy Watershed Conservation Trail Walk\, which includes a guided interpretive trail and a chance to find and learn about various natural values along the trail. We will also learn a bit about what it means to live in a watershed and will get introduced to the work of the Millard-Piercy Stewards. If the weather cooperates this week\, we may even get to help the Stewards with their daily fish count!\n\nWe are lucky to have Steve Williams join us as our Guest Leader on Sunday. Steve regularly attends NatureKids with his granddaughter\, Ruby\, and is a member of the Millard-Piercy Stewards.\n\nWhere to meet\nThe Conservation Trail Walk is south of the Airpark walk. Head south on Cliffe Avenue and turn left onto 31st st. just before you get to the last set of lights on your way out of town. There is parking there and we will meet near the big fish.\n\nWhat to bring\nConsider packing a snack and drink. If the weather cooperates\, we’ll take a break at the end of the interpretive walk and enjoy the view at the estuary near Millard Road before heading back.\n\nKids are welcome/encouraged to bring journals or binoculars or other “tools” to help them explore nature with a light touch.

DESCRIPTION:White Lake Grasslands Hike\n\nMeet at The Nature Trust pull out just south of White Lake\, along Fairview-White Lake Road.\n\nPlease wear hiking boots or sturdy shoes\, long pants (there might be ticks so light coloured is better)\, sunhat\, sunscreen.   Dress for the weather (rain or shine).  Bring water\, snacks\, and a picnic lunch in a backpack.  Check your email on the morning of the hike if the weather is questionable.  Usually we brave all weather…but double check just in case.\n\nThis hike will be along a single track trail with some uphill parts.   Not suitable for strollers (unless it’s a chariot with a single front wheel).

DESCRIPTION:Bird Box Building \nWe have received a stewardship grant from TD Friends of the Environment that will pay for us to make nest boxes to help our native cavity nesting birds! Scott Reid\, Seminar Coordinator with Lee Valley Tools is providing us with materials\, the workspace\, and guidance on building the nest boxes. \nWe will have two sessions to build the nest boxes: 1) 10 AM- noon\, and 2) noon- 2 pm. We will have a nature mentor available from 11:30-12:30 to teach us more about birds and cavity nesters. \nChoose from one of two sessions:\n1) 10 AM (Session 1)\n2) 12 PM (Session 2)\nBuilding bird boxes\, Lee Valley Tools\, Colwood. In between the 2 sessions\, from ~11:30-12:30 we will have a bird expert on site. \nWe are limited to 12 nest boxes per session. DESCRIPTION:Tour of the Pacific Great Blue Heron Colony in Stanley Park \nIt is one of the largest urban heron colonies in North America.  At this stage in the spring brooding process\, most of the chicks will have hatched.  Although they will be too small for us to see\, we should hear the insistent peeping of hungry chicks as the parents fly in and out of the heronry searching for and bringing back food.  We can also look for the herons’ beautiful blue eggshells on the ground\, which the birds chuck over the side of the nest to keep it clean.  May is a great time to visit the heronry as the leaves aren’t out yet on most trees and the visibility is good.  Our mentor\, Dalyce Epp\, has been following the herons at the Stanley Park since 2002. \nWhere: Stanley Park\, close to the tennis courts.  Meet at the parking lot on Park Lane just off Beach Ave\, behind the Park Board office (map: Park Board Office location). \nHow to get there:\nDriving: From Beach Avenue\, turn right immediately after passing the Park Board office\, and take the next right at the entrance to the lot behind the office. From Nelson Street\, turn left into the parking lot; walk a short distance south to the colony and office parking lot. \nTransit: Take either the #5 (Robson) or #6 (Davie) bus\, and get off at Pendrell Street. The tea begins at 12:30\, but we will meet upstairs at Cammidge House at noon to put together a bird-lover display board for our NatureKids club. We can include pictures of our bird-related Explorer Days\, captions we write about what we did and any bird pictures that we want to draw or cut out. \nOur display and others will be set up around Cammidge House for visitors to enjoy.
