DESCRIPTION:Lost Lake Snake Hunt \nOur annual snake hunting adventure at Lost Lake (Myra-Bellevue Provincial Park)!  We will hike in to the lake from the access point on June Springs Rd (approx half an hour)\, learning about plants\, animals\, and the history of the area.  This is in the middle of the burn zone from the 2003 fire\, so we will talk a bit about the role fire has on forests and the steps of regrowth.  Once we get to the lake\, we will ready out nets and catch anything we find; snakes\, frogs\, bugs\, tadpoles\, and more!  I will bring containers so we can all look at what we find before releasing it back where it was found. \nThe hike is easy enough to do in rubber boots\, or you can bring a change of footwear for when we get there.  The ground there is also spongy enough to go barefoot if you don’t mind hauling home muddy kids!  Also make sure to wear shorts or pants that can roll up as we will be getting right into the water. \nThe trail access point is somewhat difficult to find if you’ve never been there before\, so we will be meeting at the East Kelowna Baseball Field parking lot and carpooling to the trail.  There is not a lot of space to park there\, so the fewer vehicles the better.  Meet at the parking lot at 12:30 pm.  If you miss the carpool group\, the address of the trail access is 4406 June Springs Rd.  When parking\, do not completely block access to the roadway.\n​\nCameras are a must for this adventure!  As well\, please remember to wear sunscreen\, bring a water bottle\,  and have weather-appropriate clothing for the hike.

DESCRIPTION:Wandering Willows Beach Clean-up\n\nTime to enjoy the beach and keep it enjoyable for generations to come! On this Explorer Day we will meet up with our nature mentor Jacquelyn Cantwell\, Combing the Coast Coordinator with the Surfrider Foundation (Vancouver Island Chapter).  The Surfrider organization works as a team on a number of campaigns and programs with the common goal of protecting the ocean and our beaches through education and environmental stewardship.\n\n\nJacquelyn will teach us about the impacts of garbage\, especially plastic\, on the ocean and talk about things we can all do to reduce plastics at home\, at school\, and in our communities. DESCRIPTION:Kus-Kus-Sum Site Restoration Project\n\nCaila Holbrook from Project Watershed will introduce us to the salt marsh and nearby habitats of the Courtenay Estuary\, and the Kus-Kus-Sum project\, which aims to restore the old field sawmill site to a natural state. Caila is used to hosting school groups and has some activities prepared for the kids that will help them understand the value of natural as opposed to hardened environments for wildlife.\n\nPlease RSVP if you plan to attend – either by email or on the Facebook page so we have a general sense of numbers.\n\nPlease Bring\nAs we will be going down into the mud flats\, please bring appropriate shoes (you may like to bring footwear for the mudflats and then a change for when we are doing the activities up at the Kus Kus Sum site). Please also bring sunscreen\, hats\, etc. and otherwise be prepared for the weather. I will be providing a donation to the Kus-Kus-Sum project to thank Caila for her program. While there is no requirement to do so\, if you’d like to consider an additional small donation\, I’m sure that would be welcomed as Kus Kus Sum is an active fundraising project. Caila will open the gates to the old Field Saw Mill Site on Comox Road\, just south (towards Comox) of the 17th st. Bridge. Go through the gates and park on the property. It is not recommended to turn left into the gates if you are coming from Comox. Instead\, you’ll want to access the gates from the right hand side of the road given the heavy traffic typically in that area.

DESCRIPTION:Bat Count \nJoin us for an evening bat count. Bat counts start at sunset (around 9pm or 9:30pm) and go for about an hour. Bat counts are usually done between June 1-21 or July 11 to August 5ththroughout the province. The data can be submitted to the bat citizen science coordinator who will summarize and submit to the BC Community Bat Program. \n\nMore details coming soon.

DESCRIPTION:Fish Release at Maple Ridge Park! \nThis event will be in collaboration with A.R.M.S. (Alouette River Management Society) and ALLCO Fish Hatcheries. It will include releasing around 5000 chinook fry into the Alouette River! There is a water park\, playground\, field and of course the shallow river for children and families to play at before and after the event\, so just know there is lots to do incase you’re early or choose to stay later. See the attached file for address and more information on event day. \nPlease\, please do respond to this email or the email on the poster below if you do plan to attend as so refreshments and other logistics can be appropriated to the number of people attending. \nWe are super excited to kick off the summer with you all in less than three weeks!
