SUMMARY:VANCOUVER
DESCRIPTION:Birding Survey at UBC Farm \nJoin us for a birding survey at UBC Farm with Nature Mentors from Nature Vancouver. Over 100 species of birds have been seen at this site during monthly surveys. On this bird focused Explorer Day\, we’ll be looking for wintering birds. You may want to become familiar with some of these before our tour\, such as the Northern Flicker\, Black-capped Chickadee\, Song Sparrow\, Dark-eyed Junco\, Spotted Towhee\, and American Goldfinch. Our approximately 1.5 km walk will take us through farm fields\, the children’s garden area\, a mature second growth conifer forest\, and a young alder forest. \nWe’ll meet at 9 AM at the main gate to the UBC Farm\, located on South Campus\, at 3461 Ross Drive. If you are taking the bus\, consult Translink for directions from your home. The farm gate is locked so please be punctual\, as we will all need to enter together. \nBring binoculars if you have them. We will have some to share. Also\, there will be a spotting scope (a small portable high-power telescope) set up at low height to accommodate our kids. Remember to dress for the weather as bird watching often involves some standing around. \nRSVP here.

SUMMARY:VICTORIA
DESCRIPTION:Hike to Devonian Regional Park \n\nLet’s bring in the New Year with a hike to appreciate the beauty in our “backyards.” We will hike along the Beach Trail from the Main Parking Lot through the forest\, across Sherwood Creek to Taylor Beach.  Bring a thermos of hot chocolate and some snacks to reward your little ones (I will bring cookies to share).  At the beach we will have some snacks and do some nature crafting if it’s not too cold!  The hike is rated easy\, is 2 km and takes about 1 hour round trip. \nWHERE: Meet at the Main Parking lot\, 4749 William Head Rd\, Victoria \nDIRECTIONS to the Devonian Regional Park:\nBy car from Downtown Victoria: Go north on Highway 1 and take exit 10 toward View Royal/Colwood.  Merge onto Burnside Road West and continue on Old Island Highway (Hwy 1A)\, to Sooke Road. Old Island Highway becomes Sooke Road and\, about 2km after this name change\, turn left at the intersection onto Metchosin Road. Follow Metchosin Road for the next 8km until you reach a 3-way intersection. Go straight through the intersection as the road is now named William Head Road. A short 2km drive further and the gravel parking lot for Devonian Regional Park is on your left. \nTrail maps: https://www.victoriatrails.com/trails/devonian-regional-park/\nDescription of trail: 40 km elevation gain along well-developed trail through forest. \nBRING: Any snacks that you’d like as well as appropriate outerwear and sturdy footwear for a hike and for the weather.
