Scott Reid\, Seminar Coordinator with Lee Valley Tools is providing us with materials\, the workspace\, and guidance on building the nest boxes. \nWe will have two sessions to build the nest boxes: 1) 10 AM- noon\, and 2) noon- 2 pm. We will have a nature mentor available from 11:30-12:30 to teach us more about birds and cavity nesters. \nChoose from one of two sessions:\n1) 10 AM (Session 1)\n2) 12 PM (Session 2)\nBuilding bird boxes\, Lee Valley Tools\, Colwood. In between the 2 sessions\, from ~11:30-12:30 we will have a bird expert on site. \nWe are limited to 12 nest boxes per session. DESCRIPTION:Tour of the Pacific Great Blue Heron Colony in Stanley Park \nIt is one of the largest urban heron colonies in North America.  At this stage in the spring brooding process\, most of the chicks will have hatched.  Although they will be too small for us to see\, we should hear the insistent peeping of hungry chicks as the parents fly in and out of the heronry searching for and bringing back food.  We can also look for the herons’ beautiful blue eggshells on the ground\, which the birds chuck over the side of the nest to keep it clean.  May is a great time to visit the heronry as the leaves aren’t out yet on most trees and the visibility is good.  Our mentor\, Dalyce Epp\, has been following the herons at the Stanley Park since 2002. \nWhere: Stanley Park\, close to the tennis courts.  Meet at the parking lot on Park Lane just off Beach Ave\, behind the Park Board office (map: Park Board Office location). \nHow to get there:\nDriving: From Beach Avenue\, turn right immediately after passing the Park Board office\, and take the next right at the entrance to the lot behind the office. From Nelson Street\, turn left into the parking lot; walk a short distance south to the colony and office parking lot. \nTransit: Take either the #5 (Robson) or #6 (Davie) bus\, and get off at Pendrell Street. Walk 2 blocks west to the Park Board office parking lot. Alternatively\, take the #23 shuttle to its terminal stop on Morton Avenue; walk 1 ½ blocks west to the Park Board office and go to the rear.

DESCRIPTION:Snake Hunt\n\nOur annual snake hunting adventure at Lost Lake!  We will hike in to the lake from the access point on June Springs Rd (approx half an hour)\, learning about plants\, animals\, and the history of the area.  This is in the middle of the burn zone from the 2003 fire\, so we will talk a bit about the role fire has on forests and the steps of regrowth.  Once we get to the lake\, we will ready our nets and catch anything we find; snakes\, frogs\, bugs\, tadpoles\, and more!  I will bring containers so we can all look at what we find before releasing it back where it was found. \nThe hike is easy enough to do in rubber boots\, or you can bring a change of footwear for when we get there.  The ground there is also spongy enough to go barefoot if you don’t mind hauling home muddy kids!  Also make sure to wear shorts or pants that can roll up as we will be getting right into the water. Cameras are a must for this adventure!  As well\, please remember to wear sunscreen\, bring a water bottle\,  and have weather-appropriate clothing for the hike. \nWhere: Lost Lake Trail\,  Myra-Bellevue Provincial Park (off June Springs Rd)\nThe trail access point is somewhat difficult to find if you’ve never been there before\, so we will be meeting at the East Kelowna Baseball Field parking lot and carpooling to the trail.  There is not a lot of space to park there\, so the fewer vehicles the better.  Meet at the parking lot at 12:30 pm.  If you miss the carpool group\, the address of the trail access is 4406 June Springs Rd.  When parking\, do not completely block access to the roadway. \n\n\n \n

Help us to erect a bat box near to the park’s wetland and learn more about the kinds of bats that live in the area\, about a bat’s life cycle\, diet etc with biologist Trudy Chatwin. DESCRIPTION:Riverside Trail Walk at Slocan Pool\n\nWe’ll be taking a nature walk along the lovely riverside trail at Slocan Pool. This is an easy hike on a loop trail with many side trails to explore. Our focus for this morning will be child-led exploration! We’ll bring our nature investigation tools like magnifying glasses and field guides\, play games\, and pause to write and draw in our nature journals.\n\nA bonus on his trail is that there are several geocaches hidden along the way. Lets see if we can find a few! Feel free to bring small items to exchange in the geocaches. Parents can also download the official geocaching app to see the locations.\n\nOur walk will wrap up at the beach. Water is high but on our last visit a few days ago there was still a bit of beach to explore. If you’d like to stay and maybe have a picnic lunch please feel free!\n\nDirections from Nelson: west on Hwy 3 towards Castlegar\, turn left at the Dam Inn. Follow the road to the bottom of the hill where you will see a parking lot outside the Fortis gate. We will meet at the parking area and walk to the trailhead together. There are no bathroom facilities.
