DESCRIPTION:On the lower reaches of Erskine Mountain\, the forest is unique\,amazingly different than other parts of Salt Spring. Near thebeginning of the trail there are deciduous trees and many youngconifers starting out on their journey in life. We will learn several species\, and focus especially on the Hemlock\, which is surprisingly prolific in this location.These trees are fascinating ‘to read’ and it is great fun to learn todetermine their age. They hold secrets and tales of their life’sjourney from a seedling. Learning to read the signs\, we will makeconnections to the kids’ lives. We’ll do some storytelling andwriting too\, both real and imaginative as there may be fairies about!Our trail begins off Trustees Trail and we will not travel too far\,perhaps only a kilometre or so. DESCRIPTION:We will be joining the Arrow Lakes Caribou Society for a community lichen pick. ALCS is a non-profit in Nakusp which is working to recover the Central Selkirk herd of southern mountain woodland caribou (the southernmost herd left in BC – just 26 animals remaining). The maternity pen project in Nakusp houses pregnant cows from March – July annually to keep them and their calves safe from predators. During penning\, caribou are fed tree lichen that they normally eat in the wild. DESCRIPTION:Join Kamloops NatureKids to create festive nature crafts! Club Leader Sonya will lead you in the creation of Himmeli\, or pająk. These are geometric mobiles made from dried straw\, string and other found natural objects\, and are made throughout Europe. As the weather cools in the northern hemisphere\, people have been making these traditional decorations for centuries. Come learn about the craft and make your own beautiful festive decorations.  \nLocation to be decided based on weather. DESCRIPTION:We will be joined by volunteers from Nelson Search and Rescue for a fun and informative afternoon. Do your kids know what to do if they get lost in the woods? What should you pack to be prepared for emergencies? How to call for help\, and how to make sure you are FOUND? Through games\, demonstrations and hands-on activities we will all learn from the experts how to stay safe in the outdoors. This will be a fun and active afternoon and we are very thankful for the search and rescue volunteers who will be meeting with our club. The exact activities will depend on how many people are coming and the ages of the kids\, so we’d appreciate it if folks can sign up early so our mentors have time to prepare an awesome program! Some possible activities are shelter building and starting fires. Priority registration is for NatureKids members.
