DESCRIPTION:Snake Hunt\n\nOur annual snake hunting adventure at Lost Lake!  We will hike in to the lake from the access point on June Springs Rd (approx half an hour)\, learning about plants\, animals\, and the history of the area.  This is in the middle of the burn zone from the 2003 fire\, so we will talk a bit about the role fire has on forests and the steps of regrowth.  Once we get to the lake\, we will ready our nets and catch anything we find; snakes\, frogs\, bugs\, tadpoles\, and more!  I will bring containers so we can all look at what we find before releasing it back where it was found. \nThe hike is easy enough to do in rubber boots\, or you can bring a change of footwear for when we get there.  The ground there is also spongy enough to go barefoot if you don’t mind hauling home muddy kids!  Also make sure to wear shorts or pants that can roll up as we will be getting right into the water. Cameras are a must for this adventure!  As well\, please remember to wear sunscreen\, bring a water bottle\,  and have weather-appropriate clothing for the hike. \nWhere: Lost Lake Trail\,  Myra-Bellevue Provincial Park (off June Springs Rd)\nThe trail access point is somewhat difficult to find if you’ve never been there before\, so we will be meeting at the East Kelowna Baseball Field parking lot and carpooling to the trail.  There is not a lot of space to park there\, so the fewer vehicles the better.  Meet at the parking lot at 12:30 pm.  If you miss the carpool group\, the address of the trail access is 4406 June Springs Rd.  When parking\, do not completely block access to the roadway. \n\n\n \n

This is an easy hike on a loop trail with many side trails to explore. Our focus for this morning will be child-led exploration! We’ll bring our nature investigation tools like magnifying glasses and field guides\, play games\, and pause to write and draw in our nature journals.\n\nA bonus on his trail is that there are several geocaches hidden along the way. Lets see if we can find a few! Feel free to bring small items to exchange in the geocaches. Parents can also download the official geocaching app to see the locations.\n\nOur walk will wrap up at the beach. Water is high but on our last visit a few days ago there was still a bit of beach to explore. If you’d like to stay and maybe have a picnic lunch please feel free!\n\nDirections from Nelson: west on Hwy 3 towards Castlegar\, turn left at the Dam Inn. Follow the road to the bottom of the hill where you will see a parking lot outside the Fortis gate. We will meet at the parking area and walk to the trailhead together. There are no bathroom facilities.

We will be stopping mid-way for a snack\, and Jamie has offered to introduce us to mindful eating as well\, so please pack a drink and healthy snack option for our mid-hike picnic! \n \nThe location for the hike is a bit of a distance from town\, you probably want to give yourself 35-40mins for the drive. \n \nDirections to Upper Oyster River Trail from Courtenay: Take old island highway north from Courtenay. After the Oyster river bridge take your second left onto Croydon Rd. Follow Croydon left to Upland Rd. Follow until Glenmore Rd\, then turn right. Follow until gate (maybe a two minute drive). Park near the yellow gate.  \n \nWhat to bring: a healthy snack (as we sill be stopping mid-way on the hike for a snack and chat). Bring some water and sun protection as needed. We ask that people refrain from bringing dogs on our adventures. \n \n\n

DESCRIPTION:Bat Count \nThe kind owners of a ranch at 143 Mile House whose bat colonies are being monitored in the BC Community Bat Program have extended an invitation to WLFN club members to witness and participate in counting the evening bat emergence. \nIt’s about a half hour drive and we count for one hour at official sunset. Dress warmly and bring a chair if you like. Flashlights can be used to access the site but not during the count. This trip is weather dependent as it can’t be raining during the survey. We will bring home some native plant seeds to help pollinators in your own garden.\n\nLocation:  Fort Rodd Hill and Fisgard Lighthouse National Historic Sites in Colwood. After we’re done we can visit the Secret Garden and see how one of the locals turned the weed-filled strip of land behind his house into a gorgeous public garden.\n\nIf you can bring a clipboard and some grocery-sized bags for your garbage that would be great.\n\nLocation: Beach access at Centennial Parkway and 4th Ave\, Tsawwassen (street parking is available)

DESCRIPTION:Toading in Canoes at Ryder Lake \nJoin us for a Toad-ally fun adventure at 48750 Ryder Lake Road. \nYou may know about the Ryder Lake Amphibian Protection Project\, and if you don’t\, it is a project run by the Fraser Valley Conservancy since 2008 that works with Ryder Lake landowners to study the migration patterns of local amphibians. On June 16\, we have the super toad-ally awesome opportunity to join Grace Overduin and Kendra Morgan\, our Host and Nature Mentor\, to learn about the Western toad. Depending on the stage of the toads; we are invited to help put up the fencing that protects the toads during their migration monitor the toads in the toad tunnel review their habitat canoe on the lake and observe the toads metamorphosing. \nWhat to bring: life jacket\, water adequate clothing and footwear for the weather; such as sunscreen\, runners\, rain gear. \nLocation: 48750 Ryder Lake Road
