Before you get to Forbidden Plateau Road\, you should see the entrance to Wildwood Forest on your right. There is parking along the road and in a small pull out on the left side across from the entrance. Please be very careful with parking and kids on the road as it can be a busy stretch. We will meet a few steps into the forest so as to keep the group off the road.\n\nI’ll send out a few more details and weather update in the days leading up to the event. We typically go ahead in all weather\, with the exception being high winds in this type of forested environment.\n\nPlease let me know if you will be attending so I have a sense of numbers and who to expect.

DESCRIPTION:Celebrate World Wetlands Day at Rithet’s Bog! \nWe will celebrate World Wetlands Day on February 2nd by visiting the last remaining peat bog on the Saanich Peninsula: Rithet’s Bog. Come join NatureKids for a scavenger hunt and a guided walk around Rithet’s Bog led by our Nature Mentor\, Russ Pym\, of the Rithet’s Bog Conservation Society. We will learn about the great work that is being done to protect and restore this important wetland.\n\nLocation: Rithet’s Bog. Meet at the corner of Chatterton Way and Dalewood Lane in front of the information kiosk.  There is parking along Dalewood.\n\nMAP LINK: http://www.rithetsbog.org/trailmap/trailmap.htm\n\nOTHER LOGISTICS: Dress for the weather\, rain or shine. Note there are no washroom facilities along the trail. The loop trail around the bog that we will be following is 2.8 km (about a 2 hour walk).\n\nWhy are wetlands and bogs important?\n\nWetlands play a critical role in flood control\, maintaining water quality and providing habitat for diverse animal and plant life.  Peatlands (bogs) in particular\, are also important carbon sinks. Carbon sinks are natural systems that absorb and store carbon dioxide from the atmosphere and use it in the process of photosynthesis. In the past\, there have been families of river otters spotted in this creek and they leave behind evidence of their comings and goings. Let’s see if we can spot one! \nBRING: We will have snowshoes available to lend out\, but if you have your own\, please bring them. Laura O’Brian from the Tsolum River Reservation Society will be our Nature Mentor. \nLaura has some viewing equipment (hand held microscopes and scopes) that she is going to share with us – so we’ll find some time to go on a bit of a nature hunt and do some up-close viewing of our discoveries.\n\nLocation: Please meet at the Headquarters/Railway Avenue entrance to the park (Take Headquarters Road out of Courtenay\, at the “T” (approximately 10 minutes out of town)\, turn left following Headquarters Road to a 3-way stop. Veer to the right through the 3-way stop continuing on Headquarters Road. Just past Railway Avenue\, there is a sign for the park. DESCRIPTION:Exploring Rice Lake\n\nJoin us on March 3 for a scenic\, family friendly hike around Rice Lake in North Vancouver. The trail around the lake is 3 kilometres and there is minimal elevation; it takes approx. 1 hour (without stops!). Expect to see a variety of wildlife and some large trees such as Western Red Cedars and Douglas Firs. Depending on weather and time\, some families might want to hike down to the canyon afterwards.\n\nOur Nature Mentor will be our very own Leslie Bol.  Leslie did her master’s degree in herpetology (the study of amphibians and reptiles). She will bring a dip net in the hopes of finding some rough skinned newts in the lake.\n\nLocation: To get there\, take Lillooet Rd. to our meeting place at “Rice Lake Gate.”  The parking lot is at the top of Lillooet Rd.\, where the bathroom icon is on the attached map. If you have any questions about the meet-up location\, please let us know.\n\nThe trail is wide enough for single strollers. Dogs are not allowed on the trail. If you’d like to bring snacks and drinks\, there are places to stop along the way. There are public washrooms at Rice Lake Gate.

DESCRIPTION:Esquimalt Gorge Waterway Nature House \nWorld Fisheries Trust (WFT) has created a wonderful outdoor learning program that incorporates place-based\, hands-on experiences for youth of all ages! Come join NatureKids for this exciting Explorer Day along the Gorge which includes an interpretive walk\, with a guide\, along the Gorge waterway and a visit to the Nature House to get up close and personal with some marine invertebrates. \n\nWFT has created a 3D scale model of the Gorge watershed\, which allows participants to learn about how human development and activity affects our water systems. By means of an interactive demonstration\, they will explore the impacts caused by pollution\, storm drain run-off\, and pesticides use in our neighbourhoods. This session leads into a discussion about what each individual can do to reduce their impact on the environment\, and to help improve stream and shoreline health.\n\nThe group will take a guided Nature Walk along Gorge Creek to learn about the history of how and why the creek was brought back to the daylight\, and what impacts people have had on this fragile habitat. The guide will talk about the different kinds of native\, introduced and invasive plants in the park\, and the ongoing stream restoration projects that youth (and their families/friends) can get involved with.\n\nWe will also participate in a saltwater touch tank aquarium activity that provides a hands-on experience to learn about the local marine life through observation and exploration.  The touch tank may house clams\, crabs\, nudibranchs\, oysters (including BC’s only native species) and mussels\, and even critters that are found further out in the ocean (where the salinity is higher and the coast is a bit rockier) including sea stars\, sea cucumbers\, sea urchins and chitons.\n\nThis activity inspires discussion about environmental stewardship and links between First Nations cultures and their relationship with marine life.

DESCRIPTION:Herring Spawn \nWe are so excited to have Scott Wallace as our Nature Mentor teaching us all about herring spawning and life cycles. Scott is a marine ecologist\, who has focused his career on marine conservation and is employed by the David Suzuki Foundation as a Senior Research Scientist.  Whether the herring show up or not\, we’ll find some great marine/intertidal discovering and exploring opportunities.\n\nPlease come prepared for beach walking and windy conditions. We ask that dogs are left at home and that we work with kids to encourage natural items to be left in nature.\n\nFor the month of March\, BC NatureKids is partnering with Healthy By Nature (a BC Parks Foundation initiative) to encourage kids and youth to get outside. We will be participating through our March Explorer Day\, but check it out as a family!\n\nLocation: final details to be announced via email as we’ll be selecting the site based on herring numbers.  We will likely be meeting somewhere between South Courtenay and Kye Bay. Please check emails the day before or morning of for location.

DESCRIPTION:Return of the Bluebirds \nNature Kids have been invited by our next Nature Mentor\, John Franken for a two hour workshop. This first hour will be inside\, listening to and watching John’s informational slide show presentation. Then\, we go outside to build the bluebird houses. B \n\nPart of this workshop involves assembling bluebird nest boxes. We are especially interested in having children attend: the parts of the boxes will be pre-cut\, drilled\, etc.\, so that we can assemble them together on the porch of the Hall (no tools allowed in the Hall). \nIt is necessary to pre-register for this because we have to know how many boxes to prepare. Please notify me if you (and a child!) will attend. Carly is a graduate from the geology and sustainability program at Dalhousie University. She has a passion for the natural world and has spent time working in a gold exploration camp in Western Australia and in oil and gas exploration in Trinidad and Tobago. Carly’s interests lie in outdoor education and she is currently pursuing this as a teaching assistant at the Nelson Waldorf school. \nDuring this month’s event we will be introduced to the geologic history of the Kootenays. We will get to explore samples of different rock types and create dioramas of the moutainous region that we call home.
