SUMMARY:VANCOUVER
DESCRIPTION:Exploring Rice Lake\n\nJoin us on March 3 for a scenic\, family friendly hike around Rice Lake in North Vancouver. The trail around the lake is 3 kilometres and there is minimal elevation; it takes approx. 1 hour (without stops!). Depending on weather and time\, some families might want to hike down to the canyon afterwards.\n\nOur Nature Mentor will be our very own Leslie Bol.  Leslie did her master’s degree in herpetology (the study of amphibians and reptiles). She will bring a dip net in the hopes of finding some rough skinned newts in the lake.\n\nLocation: To get there\, take Lillooet Rd. to our meeting place at “Rice Lake Gate.”  The parking lot is at the top of Lillooet Rd.\, where the bathroom icon is on the attached map. If you have any questions about the meet-up location\, please let us know.\n\nThe trail is wide enough for single strollers. Dogs are not allowed on the trail. If you’d like to bring snacks and drinks\, there are places to stop along the way. There are public washrooms at Rice Lake Gate.

SUMMARY:VICTORIA
DESCRIPTION:Esquimalt Gorge Waterway Nature House \nWorld Fisheries Trust (WFT) has created a wonderful outdoor learning program that incorporates place-based\, hands-on experiences for youth of all ages! Come join NatureKids for this exciting Explorer Day along the Gorge which includes an interpretive walk\, with a guide\, along the Gorge waterway and a visit to the Nature House to get up close and personal with some marine invertebrates. \n\nWFT has created a 3D scale model of the Gorge watershed\, which allows participants to learn about how human development and activity affects our water systems. By means of an interactive demonstration\, they will explore the impacts caused by pollution\, storm drain run-off\, and pesticides use in our neighbourhoods. This session leads into a discussion about what each individual can do to reduce their impact on the environment\, and to help improve stream and shoreline health.\n\nThe group will take a guided Nature Walk along Gorge Creek to learn about the history of how and why the creek was brought back to the daylight\, and what impacts people have had on this fragile habitat. The guide will talk about the different kinds of native\, introduced and invasive plants in the park\, and the ongoing stream restoration projects that youth (and their families/friends) can get involved with.\n\nWe will also participate in a saltwater touch tank aquarium activity that provides a hands-on experience to learn about the local marine life through observation and exploration.  The touch tank may house clams\, crabs\, nudibranchs\, oysters (including BC’s only native species) and mussels\, and even critters that are found further out in the ocean (where the salinity is higher and the coast is a bit rockier) including sea stars\, sea cucumbers\, sea urchins and chitons.\n\nThis activity inspires discussion about environmental stewardship and links between First Nations cultures and their relationship with marine life.

DESCRIPTION:Herring Spawn \nWe are so excited to have Scott Wallace as our Nature Mentor teaching us all about herring spawning and life cycles. Scott is a marine ecologist\, who has focused his career on marine conservation and is employed by the David Suzuki Foundation as a Senior Research Scientist.  Whether the herring show up or not\, we’ll find some great marine/intertidal discovering and exploring opportunities.\n\nPlease come prepared for beach walking and windy conditions. We ask that dogs are left at home and that we work with kids to encourage natural items to be left in nature.\n\nFor the month of March\, BC NatureKids is partnering with Healthy By Nature (a BC Parks Foundation initiative) to encourage kids and youth to get outside. We will be participating through our March Explorer Day\, but check it out as a family!\n\nLocation: final details to be announced via email as we’ll be selecting the site based on herring numbers.  We will likely be meeting somewhere between South Courtenay and Kye Bay. Please check emails the day before or morning of for location.

SUMMARY:BULKLEY VALLEY
DESCRIPTION:Return of the Bluebirds \nNature Kids have been invited by our next Nature Mentor\, John Franken for a two hour workshop. This first hour will be inside\, listening to and watching John’s informational slide show presentation. Then\, we go outside to build the bluebird houses. B \n\nPart of this workshop involves assembling bluebird nest boxes. We are especially interested in having children attend: the parts of the boxes will be pre-cut\, drilled\, etc.\, so that we can assemble them together on the porch of the Hall (no tools allowed in the Hall). \nIt is necessary to pre-register for this because we have to know how many boxes to prepare. Please notify me if you (and a child!) will attend. There will be a nominal fee of $5 / adult\, and a loonie ($1) / child. \nThis event is sponsored by Quick College\, Round Lake Community Association\, and funded by Chickadee Acres Bed and Breakfast and Eskerhazy Farm.” \nPlease email Bulkleyvalley@naturekidsbc.ca to register for this event\, or for information on how you can join Nature Kids\, Bulkley Valley chapter.

SUMMARY:NANAIMO
DESCRIPTION:Knife Safety & Carving\n\nKnife Safety is the focus of this Explorer day\, and it is great that parents will be gaining this knowledge as well\, so that you can help to reinforce the safety rules when your explorers are wanting to practice carving at home\, or while you are out camping! \nThe Mora Companion Knife is recommended for carving\, as it is a fixed blade and a good quality affordable knife\, which I have seen available at the Atmosphere store in the Country Club Mall. \nNote: Knives are NOT to be used at home before this Explorer Day program starts. Many children have over zealously decided to start carving at home before they have learned important safety protocol and cut themselves as a result. Before we can begin to carve everyone must learn the 5 knife safety rules. This Explorer Day will have a heavy emphasis on safety and the fact that knives are tools that need to be treated with respect. \nParents\, if you do not feel that your child is ready to use a real knife you can instead bring along a table knife (also known as a butter knife) and a bar of soap\, this way children will still get to practice knife strokes and safety. \nLocation: Once again we are holding this Explorer Day at our Doumont Road location.  See a map and get full directions here. \n\nWe run our events the last Sunday of every month from 1-3pm.  Email us at nanaimo@naturekidsbc.ca to join us on our adventures.

SUMMARY:NANAIMO
DESCRIPTION:Building Wood Duck Nest Boxes and learning about Wood Ducks\n\n\nPerhaps some of you know the wetland behind Oliver Woods park – in past years there have been a number of Wood Ducks that come there to nest. Urban Development has put a little pressure on these beautiful ducks\, who only nest in holes in trees. Our club will be partnering with the City of Nanaimo to build 5 nest boxes and place them around the wetland for the Ducks to nest in. We will be building the boxes ourselves (if anyone has an extra drill they are willing to bring along to use\, that would be much appreciated). I will send more information about that in the coming weeks.\n\nWe will also look around the wetland to see natural nesting sites and to learn a bit about Wood Ducks and other ducks that use this wetland. Why do the ducks come here and not other wetlands? What exactly do they need to find a good place to make a nest and raise babies?\n\nIf we have some extra time on our hands we will be playing some games in the woods by the park (if the kids can be tempted away from the playground).\n\nIf you are interested in participating please respond to the RSVP form ASAP. We might have to limit participation in building the boxes for safety reasons.\n\nLocation: Oliver Woods Community Centre \n\n\n\n\nSo Mark your Calendars for Sunday April 07 from 9 – 11AM ((I know this is not our usual time\, but this is the only time available for us to use a room in Oliver Woods Centre to build our boxes).\n\nAnd here is an adorable video of some Wood Duck ducklings leaving their nest – this is a ‘must watch’!\nhttps://www.youtube.com/watch?time_continue=3&v=Jhp7vwvAic4
