DESCRIPTION:Christmas Bird Count for Kids! \nOur second annual Christmas Bird Count for Kids will take place in Kwomais Point Park in Surrey. Avid birder\, Coleen Doucette\, will once again be our Nature Mentor for this Explorer Day.  The Christmas Bird Count for Kids is an important Citizen Science Project where all the data that the children collect is compiled into a central database. What a great way to celebrate the start of the new year – by connecting with nature AND doing important science work! As an added bonus Coleen has offered to bring her spotting scope so we can have a closer look at the rafting seabirds!

We will learn how to use binoculars and how to identify local birdlife. We’ll take a walk in the park and count the different kinds of birds we see. Our findings will be submitted through an online checklist where they can be used in scientific research. Snack provided 😉 \nInspired by the well-loved Christmas Bird Count\, the CBC4Kids engages new generations of young birders across North America.\nCBC4Kids events are coordinated locally by naturalist groups throughout December and January. Experienced guides show participants how to identify local bird life and use binoculars\, then lead them outside to find and count birds. After their adventures\, the young Citizen Scientists enjoy hot cocoa together and share their observations. DESCRIPTION:All about Owls \n\n\nOur next Explorer Day will actually be an evening event at Elk/Beaver Lake Regional Park where we will talk owls.\n\n\n\n\nIt is still cold outside\, but the owls don’t mind!  At this time of year\, owls are thinking about nesting and we are going to see if we can hear or even see some.  On this Explorer Day we will learn about some of our native owls\, what we can do to help owls\, and go on an evening walk to call for owls with our nature mentor\, Paige Erickson-McGee\, the Stewardship Coordinator at Habitat Acquisition Trust (HAT).\n\nWe will also learn about what HAT is doing\, and what we can do to help Western Screech Owls\, which have declined in the Victoria region by over 90% in the past 10 years.  Here is a link to some more information on this species from the HAT website. http://www.hat.bc.ca/western-screech-owls\n\nWHERE: Meet at the Filter Beds parking lot\, which is at the southernmost tip of the lake.   It is accessed from Beaver Lake Rd. on both sides. We will be meeting at the Coldstream Cemetary parking lot to watch for the super blood moon! If the gate is closed\, we will park along the road and walk in. DESCRIPTION:Birding in Maplewood Flats Conservation Area \nFor our next Explorer Day we are headed to Maplewood Flats in North Vancouver. The Maplewood Flats Conservation Area is a wonderful\, family friendly place to go bird watching. More than 200 hundred species of birds are spotted in the park annually. This Explorer Day will be an easy hike\, with lots of opportunity to spot and identify birds in the park’s trees and lakes\, and along the shoreline. DESCRIPTION:Wildwood Forest Exploration\n\n\n\n\n\n\nWe will meet at the Piercy Road entrance. Head towards Inland Island Highway out Piercy Road in the Dove Creek area. Before you get to Forbidden Plateau Road\, you should see the entrance to Wildwood Forest on your right. There is parking along the road and in a small pull out on the left side across from the entrance. Please be very careful with parking and kids on the road as it can be a busy stretch. We will meet a few steps into the forest so as to keep the group off the road.\n\nI’ll send out a few more details and weather update in the days leading up to the event. We typically go ahead in all weather\, with the exception being high winds in this type of forested environment.\n\nPlease let me know if you will be attending so I have a sense of numbers and who to expect.
