SUMMARY:COMOX VALLEY
DESCRIPTION:Tsolum River at the Exhibition Grounds with Tsolum River Restoration Society \nOur next Explorer Day is this Sunday at the Tsolum River behind the Courtenay Exhibition Grounds. We are lucky to have Caroline Helm from the Tsolum River Restoration Society (TRRS) as our guest leader\, and Caroline is going to help us check out some minnow traps\, and do some invertebrate investigations to get clues about the river’s health. We’ve got plans to include a scavenger hunt and make some nature art as well\, and Caroline can let us know how the salmon are doing in the Tsolum River\, and share some information about the work of the TRRS in the valley.\n\nCovid Considerations:\nNatureKids BC has updated all its protocols to be in compliance with provincial health recommendations. Please do not attend if any family members are experiencing covid-related symptoms\, and check email prior to attending the event to ensure there are no last minute cancellations due to leaders’ illness. This outing will be arranged so families can stay in their own groupings\, and we ask guardians to help us maintain social distancing between the family groups. Please bring masks to this event\, as there will be times when there may be a tendency to crowd up a little as we are looking at specimens. \n\nRSVP:\nIf you would like to attend this Explorer Day\, please RSVP by email by Friday the 6th\, as we need to have a sense of numbers for our programming and we also have a group size limit on account of Covid. We will have a maximum of 6 family groups and a total maximum of 20 people\, including leaders. It will be “first come first served”\, and I will confirm your attendance by email. In your RSVP\, please indicate the number and age of participants in your family group. I will keep a waitlist if we get more than 6 families\, so please let me know if you end up being unable to attend.\n\nWhere to meet:\nWe will meet at the parking lot behind the curling rink located at 4835 Headquarters Road (across from Vanier Secondary School).\n\nWhat to Bring:\nAs always\, please come dressed to spend approximately 2 hours outside. We will be spending time down by the river\, so it is a good idea to wear boots. You may want to bring a snack/drink\, but we won’t be taking a formal break for snack this time. Please leave dogs at home\, and help us remind the kids to “leave nature in nature”.\n\nWeather etc. \nWe typically head out rain or shine\, but I will cancel the outing if winds look too high to be safe in the forest. If the weather looks “iffy” on Sunday morning\, I’ll send out an email by 10am confirming whether or not we are going ahead.

SUMMARY:VANCOUVER - Cancelled
DESCRIPTION:Learning about North Shore Black Bears \nOn this Explorer Day we’ll go to Rice Lake in North Vancouver with guides Luci and Danielle from the North Shore Black Bear Society. Our guides will teach us about bear biology\, behaviour\, seasonal habits\, and what bears like to eat. We’ll also learn to be bear detectives so we can tell if bears have been using the area. Most importantly\, we’ll learn about best practices for living and playing in bear country and what to do if you encounter a bear. \nWe will be walking on forest trails so dress for the weather and wear sturdy shoes that you don’t mind getting a bit wet. This Explorer Day will be limited to 15 people. \nFor more information about all the great work the North Shore Black Bear Society is doing to protect black bears\, see https://northshorebears.com/home. \nSafety! Luci is certified in bear safety and awareness with the Commercial Bear Viewing Association. Our group will use our voices to let all the wildlife know that humans are in the area\, so we won’t be surprising any bears. Luci will also be carrying bear spray\, although it is extremely unlikely this will be needed. \nMeeting Location\nWe will meet close to the Rice Lake Gate. You’ll see public washrooms and\, of course\, bear proof garbage bins\, which is a good meeting spot. From Vancouver\, take the Second Narrows Bridge\, turn right on Mountain Highway and head up the hill\, then turn right at Lynn Valley Road followed by another right at Peters Road. Follow signs to the parking lot. See map below. \nFor public transit\, the 229 bus from Phibbs Exchange in North Vancouver will drop you off at the park. Check translink.ca for details. \nPlease RSVP here. \nCOVID-19\nBecause our Explorer Days are held outdoors\, we have the opportunity to properly social distance. However\, in the forest trails\, this is not always possible so\, please bring face masks for all participants over age 5. \nPlease do not register for this event if you or anyone in your family bubble has symptoms of COVID-19 such as coughing\, fever\, vomiting\, diarrhea\, loss of taste/smell\, or if you have been in contact with someone who has such symptoms or tested positive.
