SUMMARY:NELSON - Pond Dipping
DESCRIPTION:Did you know that many flying insects start their lives underwater? And that the number and type of underwater creatures in a lake or river can tell you a lot about the health of the ecosystem? Join NatureKids leader and biologist Jenni Stol and Friends of Kootenay Lake’s Environmental Outreach Coordinator Jesse Letford for a fun morning getting our feet wet to collect water samples and explore the world of aquatic mini beasts! Let’s peer beneath the surface of one of Nelson’s most loved local lakes.\n\nThere are a limited number of spots available for this event. If you sign up and cannot make it\, please let us know so we can open your space to another family. \n\n\nAccessibility: The trails are pretty flat and there is easy access to the lake from the parking lot. Pit toilets are available. Please let us know if you have any accessibility concerns or any questions about the suitability of this activity for your family.\n\nClick here to register!\nThis event is for NatureKids BC members. Become a member today! \n

SUMMARY:Virtual Ecosystem Explorer Day - #1 Oceans: Deep Sea Exploration with E/V Nautilus
DESCRIPTION:Join us for a Virtual Ecosystem Explorer Day! This is the first virtual event of a four part series that will run during fall and winter of 2023/2024! Our focus will be on ecosystems!  \nExplore the deep sea with us! Meet some of the crew members of E/V Nautilus – a team of scientists\, engineers and educators exploring the Central and Eastern Pacific\, mapping unsurveyed seafloor and characterizing deep-sea habitats through detailed remotely operated vehicle (ROV) observation\, as well as integrating emerging technologies. \nThis eight month exploration started off the coast of British Columbia and provided support to Ocean Networks Canada’s (ONC) wired seafloor observatory\, where deployed technologies gather thousands of observations about dynamics across an entire tectonic plate. In addition to deploying\, recovering\, and providing maintenance for various observatory sensors and instruments via ROV dives\, the team will assisted in scientific seafloor surveys with biological and geological sampling\, including revisiting the spectacular Endeavour hydrothermal vent field. \nThis ship-to-shore interactions will last 30 minutes with time for an expedition update and audience-led Q&A about careers\, discoveries\, or the exploration process. Join us for an evening of ocean discovery! \nThe event will take place on Zoom. Click here to register!  \nThis event is for NatureKids BC members. Become a member today! \n
