SUMMARY:SALT SPRING - Freshwater Detectives
DESCRIPTION:Join us on April 13th at Duck Creek Park to  explore this exciting stream. It’s spectacular right now with all the rain we’ve been having!Using our new Freshwater Toolkit from NatureKids BC we’ll do the serious science necessary to find out if it’s a healthy creek. We’ll measure temperature\, flow rate and turbidity. Also\, we’ll determine whether there are good hiding places for creatures and use our special microscope to look closely at the critters we find in the water and on the banks. Lots of different organisms generally means a healthy stream\, and we’ll learn which ones can only live in unpolluted water.  This is our second stream study\, and we had a great time at the first one. As a bonus\, Barred Owls are frequently seen here\, even in the daytime! And we’re likely to see many wonderful signs of spring in the park. Wear your gum boots or prepare to get wet! When: the morning of April 13\, from 10 – 12 Where: Duck Creek Park. Meet at the entrance on Sunset Drive where there’s room for parkingWhat to wear: Dress for the weather\, rain or shine we’ll go out. Boots are super important!REGISTER with Kathleen – khmaser@shaw.caThis event is for NatureKids BC members. Become a membertoday!  It’s free for 2025.  \n

SUMMARY:RICHMOND - Reifel Migratory Bird Sanctuary Tour
DESCRIPTION: Join us for an afternoon of birding at one of BC’s best-known birding spots\, the George C. Reifel Migratory Bird Sanctuary! Located in Delta\, the Sanctuary covers over 300 hectares of managed wetlands\, natural marshes\, and low dykes. A knowledgeable biologist from Reifel Sanctuary will lead us on a guided walk through the wetlands\, where we’ll learn to spot and identify birds that call the sanctuary home!  \nDid you know? During a year\, it is expected that approximately 200\,000 ducks\, 25\,000 geese\, 1\,000\,000 shorebirds\, and 70\,000 gulls use the sanctuary. \nWe’ll explore the migratory paths and behaviours of local and visiting species\, and learn about how wetland habitats support a thriving bird population. \nDate & Time: Sunday April 27\, 12:45PM – 3:30PM – Please arrive on time as our biologist-led tour starts promptly at 1:00PM. There will be free time to roam after the tour and the sanctuary closes at 4PM \nLocation: George C. Reifel Migratory Bird Sanctuary\, 5191 Robertson Rd\, Delta\, BC. We will meet at the Gift Shop \nRegistration: https://forms.gle/j8gdYzZBdEe4a7D77 \n
