SUMMARY:KAMLOOPS - Grassland Hike
DESCRIPTION:  \nCome join the Kamloops Naturalist Club for a hike\, a bonus June event. This event is open to Juniper residents\, Naturalist Club members and Nature Kids BC. We will have a shorter hike for families. I will head back with those wanting a shorter hike and Diane will head out further for those keen to hike more. I will bring along a scavenger hunt to keep the little ones engaged. \nSee the information from Diane below: \nThis is a scenic hike through Crown land between Juniper Ridge and Barnhartvale. \nWe will meet at the trailhead\, which is between the houses at 3072 and 3076 Similkameen Dr. Parking is available on the street. \nThe hike follows bike trails through dry grassland\, Douglas-fir forest with an understory of pine grass\, and a moist gully with Douglas maple and Saskatoon bushes. We’ll stop periodically to discuss the vegetation\, bird life\, and geology. \nThe hike is moderate in difficulty\, with some steep and uneven sections near the start where the trail drops down into a dry creek bed. Good footwear\, a hat\, and sunblock are highly recommended. \nParticipants can choose between two options: a short hike to a lookout (distance about 3 km\, net elevation change 50 meters\, duration 1 hour) and a longer loop through forest trails (distance about 6 km\, net elevation change 150 meters\, duration 2.5 hours). \nChildren are welcome but parents need to accompany and be responsible for their children. \nThe trip is subject to cancellation in the unlikely event that the weather is rainy\, as the trails may be slippery when wet. \n To register email kamloops@naturekidsbc.ca \n
