Salmon Arm families experienced the joy of birding during several outings in May and June with the Salmon Arm NatureKids club, Shuswap Naturalists Club and the Salmon Arm Bay Nature Enhancement Society. Families enjoyed morning walks at the Salmon Arm wharf with local nature experts, learning about birds of the foreshore!
The Salmon Arm wharf is part of Marine Peace Park and measures 440 feet in length. It’s a great spot to visit with the family to birdwatch, enjoy the sun, and appreciate views of Shuswap Lake and the surrounding mountains. This park is also home to the Salmon Arm Bay Nature Enhancement Society’s Nature House where visitors can stop in and learn about birds that call this area home.
These family events were special as they brought together several different generations; a wonderful example of fostering curiosity in nature and passing knowledge down to younger generations.
NatureKids enjoyed recording observations and completing fun activities in their Junior Birder Journals! A big thank you to Nature Canada for donating these journals to us.
The Salmon Arm Bay is the perfect spot for birding as 230 bird species have been observed in this wildlife area. One of these species spotted in this area is the western grebe, a slender water bird that is larger than a mallard but smaller than a common loon. Unfortunately in British Columbia, western grebes are a red listed species.
A big thank you to our Salmon Arm club leader, Shuswap Naturalists and the Salmon Arm Bay Enhancement Society for organizing such fantastic Birding Explorer Days for our members.
