Winter might bring chilly winds and rain, but that didn’t stop our intrepid NatureKids families from venturing out into the wild wonders of British Columbia! Let’s take a journey through our recent Winter Explorer Days in Vancouver and dive into the excitement and discoveries we shared.
A Walking Tour of Maplewood Flats – Feb. 24, 2024
Even rain couldn’t dampen our Vancouver club members spirits as they set off on a walking tour of Maplewood Flats, nestled in the heart of North Vancouver. Led by their trusty Nature Mentor, Sam Mactavish, they embarked on a soggy adventure through woodland trails and marshes.
Despite the drizzle, our keen-eyed explorers spotted a vibrant array of birdlife, including the majestic Wood Ducks gliding gracefully in the ponds. Armed with binoculars, they got up close and personal with these feathered friends, learning about their habitats and behaviors.
But birds weren’t the only stars of the show! As they trekked along, Sam shared tales of restoration efforts spanning nearly three decades, highlighting the importance of preserving ecosystems for creatures big and small. From deer to raccoons to the elusive Pacific tree frog, Maplewood Flats teemed with life at every turn.

And who knew gulls could be so clever? Six-year-old Kingsley was fascinated to learn how these crafty birds use gravity to crack open their clam snacks—a true marvel of nature’s ingenuity!
As they wrapped up our adventure, they couldn’t help but marvel at the beauty of Maplewood Flats and its vital role in supporting biodiversity. So next time you’re in the area, grab your binoculars (but leave the birdseed at home!) and experience the magic of nature right on Vancouver’s doorstep.

Feel the Mystery of the Universe: An Astronomy Workshop and Trottier Observatory Visit – March 9, 2024
From rain-soaked trails to star-studded skies, our winter explorations continued with a thrilling astronomy workshop and visit to the Trottier Observatory atop Burnaby Mountain.
Despite the chilly winds and lingering snow, our young astronomers eagerly dove into the world of celestial wonders. Led by their enthusiastic presenters, Kieran and Abby, we embarked on a cosmic journey through interactive presentations and hands-on activities.
From crafting homemade telescopes to deciphering the secrets of galaxies, our young explorers were eager to soak up every bit of knowledge. And who could forget the dazzling display of light spectra, as they donned special glasses to uncover the mysteries of the elements?
Venturing outside, they marveled at the Science Courtyard’s interactive features, from glowing stones representing distant stars to metal plates illustrating the vastness of the cosmos. It was a true feast for the senses and the mind!

Though clouds obscured our view of the night sky, they left the Trottier Observatory inspired and awestruck by the wonders of the universe. And with the promise of future stargazing adventures through the Starry Nights program, their curiosity knows no bounds!
From rain-soaked marshes to starlit observatories, our Winter Explorer Days were filled with wonder, discovery, and endless fun. So whether you’re a budding birder or a future astronomer, there’s always something new to explore with NatureKids BC.
Stay tuned for more adventures, and remember—nature’s wonders await just beyond your doorstep!
Astronomical thanks to all our amazing Nature Mentors for guiding us on these unforgettable journeys. Until next time, happy exploring!
