Could you share a bit about yourself and what drew you and your family to join NatureKids BC as a member?
“ Back in 2018, I was connected with the Otter Home Learners chapter of NatureKids BC through my membership in the Vancouver Mycological Society’s Education committee. I had the privilege of leading a mushroom walk for them at Tynehead Regional Park; I was astounded at how engaged the families were, and how many amazing and insightful questions they asked, and we ended up staying out in the forest for several hours longer than intended. When I moved to the Oceanside area recently with my daughter, we discovered that there was a very active chapter here and jumped at the chance to join. It has been a wonderful way to get to know the area and some of the incredible natural wonders that it offers. I continue to be awed by the perceptive and deeply thoughtful questions these kiddos ask at every one of the events we attend.”
How has this shared experience influenced your family’s relationship with nature so far?
“I have always loved nature and I try to encourage a deep appreciation of and respect for the natural world in my daughter. I think that NatureKids BC provides a wonderful opportunity for families to connect with the world around them, whether they already have this relationship or are learning to nurture it. We relish any opportunity to experience the Flora, Fauna and Funga around us and are grateful for the wonderful volunteers in the Oceanside and Nanaimo clubs for making these experiences available to local families.”
Do you and your family have a favourite NatureKids BC moment that you can share with us?
“We both love the 2 visits we’ve had to the Deep Bay Marine Station! You can’t beat those touch tanks! There’s nothing like the feeling of an urchin crawling across your hand!”
