NatureKids BC’s core mission is to support children ages 5-12 and their families to get outdoors, explore, play, learn about, and take action for nature. While many of our members participate in the Passport to Nature program, the Action Awards program is a more advanced challenge for members in the senior age category (10-12).
There are four types of activities involved in the Action Awards:
- Nature Detective: Study, experiment, or research the natural world and report on what you have found out and how you did your work.
- Environmental Action: Protect, conserve, preserve, or restore a part of the natural environment around you, directly or indirectly.
- Leadership: Share nature and environmental actions with your friends, family, school, or community at large by giving a presentation, meeting with your local member of Parliament or making a poster.
- Community Participation: Take part in a nature related field trip, program, or community event.
Recently, a Comox Nature Club member, Harper, successfully completed the Bronze Level Action Award, the first NatureKid to accomplish this in several years. To celebrate her achievements, we are featuring some of her work along with Q&As!

Nature Detective: “Lovely Leaves” Scrapbook
Q: Your Lovely Leaves Scrapbook is beautiful, with the pressed leaves, drawings, and fun facts. Did you press those leaves yourself? Could you share with us how you did that?
A: I used clear tape to press them into my book. I am now using a flower press to dry and press flowers as well.
Environmental Action & Leadership: Endangered Species Poster & Presentation
Q: The Endangered Species poster you made is really impressive and an important topic for us to know! What do you think are some ways that you and your friends can help protect endangered species in BC?
A: Learn about species that need help. I would love to create information booklets about a species and pair it with a plush animal and sell it to donate profits to rehabilitation centers in BC.

Community Participation: Explorer Days
Q: It looks like you had some really beautiful hikes and outdoor adventures! What are the top 3 things that you look for when you go out into nature?
A: Wildlife, Water source (ponds, oceans, lakes), and Different types of plants
Q: Your learning accomplishments are very inspiring. As you continue growing and learning with nature, and working toward the Silver Action Award level, what are you most excited about experiencing?
A: Wildlife encounters and exploring Vancouver Island more. I hope to see a sea otter.

Congratulations, Harper!
