As we celebrate 25 years of NatureKids BC, we’re highlighting the incredible individuals who have shaped our community.
This week, we’re thrilled to share the story of Marg Cuthbert, a devoted NatureKids member, passionate educator, and proud grandparent whose journey with us spans generations.
A Family Tradition in Nature
Marg first joined NatureKids BC with her granddaughter, Jasmine, eager to explore the outdoors together with expert guidance. As members of a Surrey-area Naturalist Club, Marg and her family embraced the opportunity to deepen their connection with nature and widen their social circle with like-minded families.
“We enjoyed wonderful events with other families, widening our granddaughter’s social circle. We discovered special places and saw things in nature we wouldn’t have otherwise.”

Life-Changing Connection with Nature
Marg’s experiences with NatureKids inspired her to take on a larger role in conservation education. She became Education Chair with BC Nature, using her passion to support nature education across the province —including finding ways to strengthen NatureKids BC. Her leadership in community stewardship, engagement and mentorship is one we all learn from!
“Through discovery experiences, I became more aware of how important nature education is. I wanted to encourage others and support nature knowledge in BC.”
Looking Ahead: A Dream for the Future
Marg envisions a future where NatureKids BC can bring nature exploration to even more children and families—especially in remote communities. “Wouldn’t it be amazing to have the capacity to host nature interpretation experiences within rural communities? This would also be an opportunity to learn from each other and exchange stories and ecosystem worlds with urban families.”
A Bird and a Lifelong Impact
NatureKids has provided Marg’s family with unforgettable moments— like the pivotal moment at Colony Farm’s bird banding station, where Jasmine got to hold and release a bird. This small but powerful experience stayed with her—years later, she volunteered in bird surveys in South Africa’s West Coast National Park.

A Message to Fellow Grandparents:
With Jasmine lifting off into adulthood (go Jasmine, go!), Marg and her husband nurtured a second set of grandchildren through the NatureKids experience.
“We always learn something new, have fun exploring with NatureKids friends, and come home with a deep sense of well-being and time well spent. We can’t wait for the next adventure!

It can also be especially fun to relive nature moments together while taking time to explore the NatureWILD magazine.”
Thank you, Marg, for your incredible contributions to NatureKids BC over the years and for inspiring future generations to love and protect nature!
