As we celebrate 25 years of NatureKids BC, we’re highlighting the incredible individuals who have shaped our community.
Meet Maja, a former NatureKid who turned her passion for the outdoors into a career dedicated to conservation, education, and climate action!
Meet Maja

Maja was a NatureKid from 2004-2009, later becoming a NatureKids mentor and leading Explorer Days. Now, she works with Transport Canada’s Ocean Protection Plan, strengthening relationships and connections to protect BC’s coastal waters.
“I remember being the ‘beaver expert’ at a NatureKids event at Jericho Beach—teaching other kids about beavers with a real taxidermy specimen! That experience sparked my love for environmental education.”
Mayne Island: A Place of Connection and Wonder
For Maja, Mayne Island is more than just a destination—it’s home. Having visited for over 15 years, she has built a deep bond with the island’s landscapes, where open fields, lush forests, serene wetlands, and rugged sandstone cliffs exist side by side. It’s a place that has always drawn her in, offering a sense of peace and grounding in nature. As a child, she could hardly wait for the car to stop before running down to the beach with her dog, eager to explore the shoreline. That same sense of wonder and connection to nature has stayed with her ever since.

Building Connections for Ocean Protection
For Maja, no two days at work are the same! Her role revolves around building and strengthening relationships—bringing people together with a shared goal of protecting our oceans. Whether she’s coordinating meetings, creating opportunities for collaboration, or fostering connections between communities and conservation efforts, her work is all about making a lasting impact for marine ecosystems.
Her biggest piece of advice? Spend as much time outside as possible! The more time you spend in nature, the more you’ll appreciate it—and everything else will fall into place.
