As we celebrate 25 years of NatureKids BC, we’re highlighting the incredible individuals who have shaped our community.
This week, we’re sharing the story of Graham, a 14-year-old NatureKid from Richmond, and his mom, Debbie, who joined our community when Graham was just a little explorer.

“I’ve been in nature for as long as I can remember!”
From neighbourhood walks to bird sanctuaries and sunsets by the water, nature has always been part of Graham’s life. But it was through NatureKids events that his love for the living world truly came alive.
A memory that stuck?
Graham remembers the thrill of carrying salmon fry to a creek near Spanish Banks, gently releasing them into the water. “It was very exciting to see so many baby salmon splash into the creek and out into the ocean,” he recalls.
Today, that early spark has grown into a genuine passion for the natural world. Graham now observes the behaviour of his pet fish, watches hummingbirds visit the feeder outside his window, and is planning a spring garden with his family to grow tomatoes and herbs.

Debbie shares:
“Participating in NatureKids gave Graham opportunities to explore nature in ways he wouldn’t have otherwise. He now appreciates the beauty of nature, loves going on walks, and even wants to own a cat! NatureKids helped plant that seed of curiosity.”
One of their most memorable experiences as a family? A 5-day marine biology trip to Bamfield Marine Sciences Centre—an incredible extension of their love for hands-on science and conservation.

“Thank you for influencing our family with the valuable conservation and nature education you provide year after year! I am so glad my school (HCOS) purchased a salmon kit for our resource library a few years ago!”
We’re so grateful to have been a part of Graham and Debbie’s journey, and to have inspired a family to not only connect with nature—but to truly grow with it.
Thank you to Graham, Debbie, and all the NatureKids families who make our community so special.
